Veggie spread will be headed for the stars
AMES, Iowa – Astronauts no longer have an excuse for not eating their vegetables.
A team of Penn State University students has designed a vegetable spread for space travelers.
The product earned the students first place in a space product development contest sponsored by the NASA Food Technology Commercial Space Center at Iowa State University.
Veg(at)eez is a three-layer vegetable spread designed specifically for space travel. Contest officials said it is shelf-stable, easy to prepare and convenient to eat.
Veg(at)eez is made from minimally processed spinach, chard, tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes and radishes and combined with spices.
The annual competition was established in 2001 to increase food science awareness, officials said. .
