Bushes to travel to celebrate graduations

Associated Press

WASHINGTON – President Bush and his wife, Laura, will dash from Texas to Connecticut next weekend for private celebrations of their twin daughters’ college graduations.

Jenna Bush is to graduate May 22 from the University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor’s degree in English. Barbara Bush graduates May 24 with a bachelor’s in humanities from Yale University in New Haven, Conn.

The Bushes will attend dinners for family and friends in both cities – today in Austin and Sunday in New Haven – but will not attend graduation ceremonies, said spokesman Gordon Johndroe. If the Bushes were to attend, all guests would be required to go through metal detectors.

“The Bushes have tried to create an atmosphere where their daughters could go to school with some privacy and did not want to disrupt that any more on their last weekend,” Johndroe said.

He said the twins would travel after graduation, and perhaps work on their father’s re-election campaign.
