Home builders say we’re in the midst of the hottest housing market many have seen since the early 1990s. Permits for single-family homes were up 24 percent in the first quarter compared with the same time last year.

Builders are scrambling to keep up with demand, and prices of new homes are rising, but a shrinking inventory of buildable land is an obstacle, some say.
