Bishop to lead workshops

Bishop William Swing of the Episcopal Diocese of California will offer two workshops at the Cathedral of John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave.

Swing is the founder of the United Religious Initiative, which promotes daily interfaith cooperation in order to end religiously motivated violence and create cultures of peace, justice and healing throughout the world.

The workshops, next Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. and May 23 from 10 to 11 a.m., will explore the parallels between URI and the United Nations and discuss the question, “Is the U.S. at war with Islam?,” in reference to the situation in Iraq.

In addition, Swing will conduct services at the cathedral on May 22 and 23.

Westminster celebration

Westminster Congregational United Church of Christ will celebrate its 125th anniversary on May 23 with a choral and instrumental service and luncheon. The service will begin at 10:30 a.m. with music from the Joel Harper Memorial organ.

Located at 411 S. Washington St., the church was founded on May 22, 1879, by Henry and Lucy Cowley. Construction on the stone building began in 1890, and the church has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978.

A free luncheon will follow the May 23 service and will include chamber music and a display historical documents and photographs. Donations will be accepted. Information: 624-1366.

Recitals in Post Falls

St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church in Post Falls will host two recitals titled “Soiree @ the Salon” on Sunday. The performances, described as a “diverse recital of diverse instruments,” will feature the premier of “Five Little Pieces for Flute and Piano,” presented by composer Michael Young on piano and Cynthia Horton on flute.

The evening also includes performances by Gregory Horton on tuba, and Allyson Gross, vocals.

The concerts will be in the Little House at the church, 4718 Horsehaven, Post Falls, at 5 and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for reserved seating, and by donation for unreserved. Contact Gail Goodsen at (208) 665-1910 for more information.
