Buchanan repeats as Pac-10 champ

Washington State senior Anthony Buchanan repeated as the 100-meter dash champion Saturday on the final day of the Pacific-10 Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Tucson, Ariz.

Buchanan, a graduate of University High School, clocked a 10.21 dash, his fastest time this season and a lifetime best for a non-wind-aided race.

The Cougars’ men’s 4x100 relay team of Buchanan, Martin Boston, Jaycee Robertson and Jame McSwain finished third with a time of 39.73.

WSU freshman Barry Leavitt finished sixth in the men’s 400 with a regional-qualifying time of 51.78.

WSU’s Monique Jessie was fourth in the women’s 400-meter hurdles with a regional-qualifying time of 60 seconds. Teammate Blessing Ufodiama placed third in the women’s triple jump with a leap of 42 feet.

UCLA won both Pac-10 titles. The men finished with 143 points, followed by Oregon (130) and Arizona State (120). WSU was last with 41 points.

The Bruins women tallied 174.5 points, followed by Stanford (153) and Southern Cal (111). WSU was last with 45 points.

•Mary Kamau won a pair of events to guide the Idaho women to a second-place finish and Pat Ray and J.R. Ruffin finished 1-2 in the 200-meter dash to help the Vandals’ men place third at the Big West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Irvine, Calif.

Kamau won the 800 in 2 minutes, 11.95 seconds and finished first in the 1,500 with a time of 4:26.04 as the Vandals piled up 150 1/2 points, second to Big West champion Cal State Northridge (165).

Kamau was named the Big West track athlete of the year.

Ray clocked a 21.17 in winning the 200, while Ruffin hit the finish line in 21.41.

Northridge won the men’s title with 157 points, followed by Cal Poly (143) and Idaho (116).

Idaho’s Brandon Folk took second in the men’s javelin with a toss of 211 feet. Teammate Russ Winger was runner-up in the shot put with a throw of 58-0 1/2 .

Kate Buehler (150-0) and Sarah Willette (146-8) finished second and third in the women’s javelin for the Vandals.

•Eastern Washington’s Mike Quinn nailed an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 194-3 in the men’s hammer throw during the final day of the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championships in Ogden, Utah.

It was a personal best for Quinn, who finished third in the event.

Eastern’s Billy Grubbs and Jason Demeroutis earned All-Conference honors with second-place finishes.

Grubbs had a career-best leap of 48-4 3/4 in the triple jump, while Demeroutis threw the discus 163-10. Alex Moon also earned All-Conference honors with a third-place showing in the 400-meter hurdles (52.10). The Eagles men finished seventh as a team.

Haley Heater and Angel Davis both picked up All-Conference honors for the eighth-place EWU women’s team.

Heater ran a career-best 1:01.63 to place second in the 400 hurdles, while Davis sped to a career-best 11.93 and finished third in the 100.

Weber State won the men’s title and Northern Arizona won the women’s title.

•Seattle Pacific’s Danielle Ayers-Stamper placed second in the heptathlon at the Ken Foreman Invitational in Seattle and qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships. Ayers-Stamper, who hails from LaCrosse, scored 4,855 points over the seven events, fourth best in the nation this year.

Baseball

Ed Clelland struck out 11 batters to lead the Gonzaga Bulldogs (23-26, 15-11) to a 7-2 West Coast Conference victory over the visiting Saint Mary’s Gaels (14-37, 7-19) at Avista Stadium.

Clelland (5-6) scattered seven hits and walked just one over eight innings.

Kiel Thibault’s two-run home run in the third put the Bulldogs up 5-0.

•David Johnson allowed just one run, while working into the seventh inning, to lead the UCLA Bruins (28-24, 9-8) to a 3-1 win over the visiting Washington State Cougars (26-21, 6-12).

Aaron MacKenzie (5-7) took the loss for the Cougs. MacKenzie went eight innings, allowed seven hits, three runs and struck out five.

•Zach Clem went 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs to spark the 13th-ranked Washington Huskies (32-15-1, 14-6) to a 13-4 romp over the Southern Cal Trojans (21-27, 7-10) in Los Angeles.

Sophomore Matt Kasser (3-0) allowed only two earned runs in 7 2/3 innings of work to pick up the victory.

Softball

The top-ranked Arizona Wildcats (53-4, 17-3) swept the seventh-ranked Washington Huskies (36-17, 10-10) by scores of 3-0 and 5-1 in a Pac-10 season-ending doubleheader in Seattle.

The Huskies finished fifth in the conference. Arizona clinched the conference title last week.

Teams will be selected to the NCAA Tournament today.
