Ferris falls, but Tigers score upset

Ferris was two minutes away from being shut out by Pasco.

That’s when Cody Wilson scored Ferris’ first goal.

Unfortunately, the goal was negated due to an offsides call.

That’s pretty much how the game went for the Saxons, as Pasco (14-3) rolled over Ferris (13-5) by a 4-0 margin in the loser-out State 4A opener Saturday at Ferris.

Lewis and Clark, meanwhile, scored a 2-1 overtime upset of the Big Nine’s No. 1 team, host Wenatchee.

“We couldn’t score,” Ferris coach Robin Crain said, “(The ball) went high, and it went wide. It was bad luck. The game could just as easily have been 4-0 in favor of us. Today’s game was a matter of luck.”

Good luck for Pasco.

Pasco scored once in the first half, when Juan Chairez picked up a through ball from Victor Perez, beat two defenders and shot just over Ferris goalkeeper Josh Anderson’s reach into the upper right corner.

In the second half, the Bulldogs tripled their luck, scoring three more times.

They scored their first second-half goal at 54 minutes when Shayne Kelly picked up a ball from teammate Farlas Froylan and shot, the ball deflecting off a Ferris defender and sending it into the lower left corner.

Julio Morales scored Pasco’s third goal when his bicycle kick from just outside the box sailed into the upper left corner over Anderson’s head.

Perez scored Pasco’s final goal on a header into the lower left corner.

Ferris, as Crain mentioned, wasn’t so lucky.

In addition to Wilson’s goal that was called back and numerous wide shots, Ferris faced the roaring crowd from Pasco.

Pasco fans were vocal in their displeasure with the officiating in the physical game with one fan threatening a player and another getting into an argument with two other Saxons players.

A couple of yellow cards in a matter of minutes didn’t stop the players from pushing each other around.

It didn’t stop the crowd from taunting either.

“Any time you get into state games it is going to be like that,” Pasco coach Chad Bordner said. “The guys want to win and they play very aggressively. That’s just how it is.”

Bordner disagreed with his crowd’s assessment of the officiating.

“These are some of the better refs in the state,” Bordner said, “I was fine with how they called the game. They called it the same from beginning to end.”

•In Wenatchee, Lewis and Clark dominated possession and defeated the Panthers.

“That was our fourth overtime game of the year and fourth time winning without going to a shootout. These boys know how to win. They find a way to get the result that we need,” LC coach Kenny Krestian said.

Stefan Andersson scored when he was fed a ball at 25 out when he went left and then right and fired a rocket into the upper right corner of the goal at 73:00 to tie the score 1-1 and send the game into overtime.

In overtime, Wenatchee kicked off and had early possession.

LC cleared it to the middle of the field where Brad Posten tackled the ball and played it to C.J. Moe at 30 yards out.

Moe then gave him the ball back to midfield.

Posten drove down the line until he was 20 yards out where he fed a pass to Matt Harnetiaux who dummied the ball between his legs which froze the Wenatchee defense. Brandon Darnell picked it up at 18, took his first touch just out of the box and tucked the ball into the right side of the goal.

“It was one of the most creative goals we scored this year,” Krestian said.

Pasco will play Lewis and Clark in the state 4A quarterfinal game next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hart Field.

Junior Garcia and Silvano Ramos scored one goal apiece as Sunnyside (16-4) defeated Cheney (15-5) 2-1 in a 3A playoff game in Cheney. Devin Merrill scored Cheney’s only goal directly off of a corner kick at 45 minutes to come within one but missed shots prevented Cheney from scoring again. Cheney will be the No. 2 seed for the first round of state that begins on Tuesday.

Elsewhere in 3A regional soccer, Hanford (15-4) defeated visiting West Valley-Yakima (12-6) 2-0. Sunnyside will play Hanford on Tuesday in the opening round of state 3A soccer.

Medical Lake defeated Pullman 2-1 in a game that went to a shootout at Mead High School.

Pullman’s Nick Degraffenreid got free in the middle and hit Levi Corcoran with an outlet pass for a breakaway goal that sent the game into overtime.

Medical Lake’s Felipe Fagundes scored the first goal of the game off a cross-pass from Jason Nabakowski.

No scoring in overtime led to a shootout in which all five shooters from each team scored before Craig Kitti scored to give the Cardinals (12-5) the win over the Greyhounds (13-3-2). Medical Lake will be the No. 1 seed to state and Pullman will be the No. 2 seed.

Chris Bruner scored at 68 minutes when he followed up on Levi Eggert’s shot to score for Riverside (10-5) as the Rams defeated Deer Park (6-12) 1-0 in a winner-to-state, loser-out game. No. 3 seeded Riverside will play East Valley-Yakima (18-1) Tuesday in Yakima.
