West Valley clinches No. 1 seed to regional

Jodi Collins hit a three-run home run in the first inning and finished 3 for 3 with four RBIs as West Valley pounded out 17 hits and clinched the No. 1 seed to the regionals Saturday by beating Clarkston 14-4 in six innings in a District 8 3A softball match at West Valley.

Hilary Shields (9-11) went the distance for the Eagles, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out 13 and walking just one.

Shields was never wanting for run support, as West Valley (9-11) scored seven times in the first inning and had a 12-1 lead after three.

Kris Wilson went 3 for 3 for Clarkston (7-14), including a two-run homer in the fifth inning. The Bantams will get a No. 2 seed to regionals.

In the day’s early game, Heather Davis’ RBIs single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh scored Tara Ruark as Clarkston edged Cheney (4-18) 5-4 in a loser-out game.

• In District 5/6 3A action in Richland, West Valley-Yakima defeated Hanford 5-1 to take the district’s No. 1 seed to regionals.

West Valley had already beaten Selah 6-2 to reach the final.

Hanford, after beating Prosser 10-0 to reach the final, is the district’s No. 2 seed.

Selah, which had beaten Sunnyside 7-4 earlier in the day in a loser-out match, beat Prosser 6-1 to earn the district’s No. 3 seed. Prosser, which beat Ellensburg 6-4 in a loser-out match in an earlier game, is the No. 4 seed.

4A

In District 5/6 4A action, Richland (21-1) held off Pasco (19-3) 1-0 at the Columbia Playfields in Richland to take the district’s No. 1 seed to regionals.

Richland reached the final by beating Kamiakin 2-0, while Pasco upended Kennewick 9-1. Pasco takes the No. 2 seed.

Kennewick (13-10), by virtue of its 3-1 win over Kamiakin (11-11), is the No. 3 seed. Kamiakin is No. 4.

Great Northern League

Melissa Rice threw a no-hitter, striking out five, as Colville beat visiting Deer Park 10-0 in five innings in Game 1 of a doubleheader sweep by the Indians.

Kim Brown went 3 for 3 with three doubles and two runs scored and Stephanie Day was 3 for 4 with a solo home run in a first inning that saw Colville score eight times.

In the second game, Day threw a one-hitter, striking out six, and went 2 for 4 with two runs scored as Colville (15-2 overall, 14-0 league) beat Deer Park (4-15, 2-12) 11-1.

Brown went 3 for 4 with five RBIs in the second game.

Elsewhere in the GNL, Bryn Smith doubled and scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the seventh as Chewelah (9-11, 7-6) beat Lakeside (10-9, 9-5) 3-2 in Game 2 of a doubleheader split. In Game 1, Monica Judd had eight strikeouts and knocked in a run as Lakeside won 2-1. . . . Charlotte Psick drove in a total of five runs as Medical Lake (6-14, 6-8) swept a doubleheader with visiting Newport (3-17, 0-14) 7-1 and 14-8. In the first game, Cardinals pitcher Caitlin Smith struck out seven and walked one. Psick, Ashlee King and Jessie Miles each drove in three in Game 2. . . . Pullman (14-4, 10-4) scored five times in the first inning en route to an 8-5 win in Game 1 as the visiting Greyhounds split a doubleheader with Riverside (11-7, 7-7). In Game 2, the Rams belted out 16 hits and took advantage of five Pullman errors, winning 8-5.

District 7 1A

Amber Borders had three singles, two steals, two runs and two RBIs as Kettle Falls (20-2) routed Freeman (17-4) 10-0 in five innings at Medical Lake in the district final.

Kettle Falls, which had already beaten Liberty 5-2 in an earlier game, earned the district’s No. 1 seed.

Freeman, which beat Colfax 3-2 in an earlier game, is the No. 2 seed.

In a loser-out game, Katie Burns, Jill Solbrack and Lynnea Vantrease each had two hits apiece as Colfax (14-8) upended Liberty (8-9) 11-4 to earn the district’s No. 3 seed to regionals.

Panorama League Tournament

Jessica Webb went 3 for 5 and Jessica Pischette struck out six as Selkirk (21-1) beat Curlew (20-2) 12-2 at Kettle Falls to secure the Panorama League’s top seed to district.

Selkirk had already beaten Inchelium 5-1 earlier in the day. Curlew, which beat Republic 3-2 earlier, is the No. 2 seed.

Inchelium (19-4) bounced back to beat St. George’s 13-3 in five innings and then Republic 14-4 in six to secure the No. 3 seed to districts. Republic (12-10), which beat St. Michael’s 15-14 after losing to Curlew, is the No. 4 seed.

St. Michael’s (9-15) held off St. George’s (7-17) in a loser-out game for the right to face the Bi-County No. 3 seed in a pigtail game Monday with a berth to districts on the line. The loser of that game will be out.

Whitman County Tournament

Casey Manning pitched a complete game, striking out four, and went 2 for 3 at the plate as Garfield-Palouse (16-4) knocked off Colton 10-2 at McDonald Park in Colfax to earn the Whitman County’s No. 1 seed to districts. Holly Holbrook went 4 for 4 with three RBIs for the Vikings.

Colton (14-8), which knocked off LaCrosse-Washtucna 10-2 earlier in the day, is the league’s No. 2 seed.

LaCrosse-Washtucna (16-6) bounced back to hold off Tekoa-Oakesdale/Rosalia 6-4 to earn the No. 3 seed to districts. Tekoa (9-13) had beaten Asotin 7-5 in a loser-out match earlier in the day.

Asotin (6-16) had routed St. John-Endicott (0-18) 10-1 in the day’s first loser-out match.
