2 EWU students jailed after pipe bomb explodes

From staff reports

Two Eastern Washington University students have been arrested in connection with a pipe bomb explosion outside Morrison Hall dormitory early Saturday.

Those two students and two others were subsequently suspended by the university while law enforcement authorities investigate the incident, school officials said. The interim suspension was expected to continue while authorities pursue criminal proceedings. The four students were removed from their dormitory rooms, university officials said.

“We have zero tolerance at our university,” said Barbara Richey, director of university relations.

The students were not identified. The bomb, detonated about 1 a.m., caused no injuries or damage, but left marks in a sidewalk.

On Sunday, university officials issued a statement that read, “The safety and security of our students is always our primary concern. We are taking this situation very seriously. This is a clear violation of the student conduct code, not to mention criminal charges.”

The investigation was being conducted by Eastern Washington University police, Spokane sheriff’s deputies and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
