Canadian woman held on bad-check charges
A Canadian woman was arrested Sunday after allegedly using forged traveler’s checks to finance a trip to the Spokane area.
The 38-year-old went shopping and paid for hotel rooms by using counterfeit American Express traveler’s checks, according to the Spokane Valley Police Department.
Donna R. Cadotte of Calgary, Alberta, was arrested on 18 counts of suspected forgery as well as suspicion of theft and identity theft, said Valley Police spokesman Cpl. Dave Reagan.
Cadotte allegedly signed 25 of the $100 checks using another woman’s name.
On Saturday, she drove to Wal-Mart and Kmart in Post Falls and cashed several of the forged checks, Reagan said. The same day, she allegedly cashed several more checks at Wal-Mart stores in Sandpoint and Spokane Valley.
On Sunday, Cadotte went back to the Spokane Valley Wal-Mart and allegedly tried to cash more forged checks. She was stopped by store security personnel who held her until police arrived, Reagan said.
The Spokane County Property Crimes Task Force has begun investigating, Reagan said.
Detectives said Cadotte’s sister, Annette Cadotte, 31, also was involved in the alleged forgeries. Annette Cadotte had not been located by law enforcement as of Monday afternoon, but Canadian and U.S. officials have been alerted not to let her cross the border into Canada, Reagan said.
