Starbucks opens new location

Fans of Starbucks coffee are rejoicing this week after a new shop opened at Argonne and Broadway. Wednesday was the shop’s first day of business and a steady stream of customers stopped by for a caffeine fix beginning at 5 a.m.

“I’m so excited,” said store manager Tammie Goulet. “It’s like Christmas time.”

“We work right next door at Cherry Creek Mortgage,” said Bill Gillingham as he sat and sipped coffee with two co-workers and ate a pastry. “I’ve got some sort of cranberry thing. It’s good.”

Starbucks district manager Al Boschma said the Argonne location was picked because customers in the area requested a store there. The national coffee shop chain has been focused on expanding locations recently. “The company has definitely set goals,” he said. “There’s such a great demand. We’re still getting many requests for new locations.”

Another Starbucks is scheduled to open in December at Sprague and Pines. Each new store employs about 15 people. Boschma said the chain’s employees are often involved in community service projects. Right now all the Starbucks stores in the area are collecting toys to be given to hospitalized children at Christmas.

The new Starbucks is one of several espresso shops in the Argonne/Mullan corridor. Linda Gilroy owns Brewed Awakenings half a block to the south. “I don’t believe they’re going to take my customers,” she said. “If you’re a Starbucks person, you are, and if you’re not, you’re not.”

Boschma said it doesn’t matter how many other espresso stands are in the area. “We feel there’s enough room for everyone,” he said.
