G-Prep rips Southridge in playoff opener
Talk about electricity.
Gonzaga Prep had it Saturday in abundance during the Bullpups’ 42-13 first-round State 4A playoff rout of Southridge before 2,053 at Albi Stadium.
Not the stuff that turns on the lights or scoreboard – that was non-existent when the game started, victim of a power outage that hit 1,500 North Side Spokane homes.
But the type supplied by a fired-up defense and an explosive offense.
Within minutes of the juice returning, the Pups’ Tom Adolfae picked off a Jason Munns pass and the surprising blowout was on. Surprising because the Suns, who finished 9-3, came in ranked seventh in the state, the Pups eighth. And Southridge is from the Big Nine Conference, a league that’s had its way with the Greater Spokane League the past few years.
Two long TD passes by Billy Karwacki ignited G-Prep.
After Michael Stockton started the scoring with a 24-yard field goal following Adolfae’s pick, the G-Prep defense forced a three-and-out. On the first play after the punt, Karwacki teamed up with Brad Parker for 51 yards and a 10-0 lead.
On the first play of the second quarter, with G-Prep (11-1) facing a second-and-8 from its 2-yard line, Karwacki hit Brandon Kennedy for a 98-yard touchdown play.
Connor Hare added a 10-yard TD run and the first half ended with Prep up 24-6.
Volleyball
The Colfax Bulldogs, playing with added emotion since learning their coach had breast cancer, dominated LaConner 3-0 in the Class 1A state volleyball championship match in the Yakima SunDome.
The scores were 25-15, 25-18, 25-22.
“These girls have been on a mission all season,” a tearful Colfax Sue Doering said after adding to state titles her teams won at Colfax in 2000 and 2001. Earlier this season, she won her 500th career match.
“Actually, these seniors have been on a mission since seventh grade,” she said.
“This has been one of the most … emotional seasons I’ve been through. It’s been more rocky for me than it has for them, even though they didn’t know if I’d be at practice or not from one day to the next after they found out I had cancer.”
