Nowak knows highs, lows of MLS Cup

Associated Press

CARSON, Calif.– Peter Nowak has played in two MLS Cups.

Nowak was the Most Valuable Player of Major League Soccer’s championship match in 1998, assisting on two goals in the Chicago Fire’s 2-0 win over D.C. United. Two years later, the Fire returned and lost 1-0 to the Kansas City Wizards.

“I remember the feeling very well after we won and after we lost,” Nowak said. “After losing the Cup, you think maybe this is your last chance at it. There’s a lot of regret, thinking you were supposed to do better than that.”

Nowak gets another crack at the championship this year. The rookie coach will guide D.C. United in today’s title match against Kansas City.

“I have a very special group of players making me look like a genius,” Nowak said.

Many people overlooked the Kansas City Wizards this year.

“Perhaps we can surprise some more folks,” Wizards coach Bob Gansler said.
