Concussed Favre keeps streak alive

Associated Press

Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre sustained a concussion in the third quarter of the Packers’ 14-7 loss to the New York Giants when defensive lineman William Joseph knocked him to the ground.

Favre, whose head bounced off the grass, sat out two plays before returning to throw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Javon Walker on fourth-and-5. After celebrating the touchdown with Walker, Favre was summoned to the sideline, where medical personnel said he displayed signs of a concussion.

Favre, however, extended his touchdown streak to 29 consecutive games with at least one scoring pass, third-longest in NFL history behind Dan Marino’s 30 and Johnny Unitas’ 47.

Coach Mike Sherman acknowledged he shouldn’t have sent Favre back into the game.

“Well, he was standing there on the sideline. I said, ‘Are you OK?’ He said yes. So, I put him back in,” Sherman said. “He threw the touchdown pass and then the doctors told me after that they didn’t want him back in the ballgame.

“The doctors hadn’t necessarily cleared him, so I was in error in putting him back in there.”

The last time Favre was held out of the end zone was Oct. 20, 2002, when Washington linebacker LaVar Arrington knocked him from the game with a sprained knee.

He has started 212 straight games, counting playoffs, an NFL record for quarterbacks.

Tomlinson tops Chargers’ list

LaDainian Tomlinson became the San Diego Chargers’ all-time leading rusher when he passed Paul Lowe’s mark of 4,972.

Tomlinson had 142 yards through three quarters against Tennessee. He finished with 147 yards, giving him 4,979 in his four-year career. He broke Lowe’s mark on a 5-yard run in the third quarter.

Lowe played with the Chargers from 1960-68.

Christie on the ropes?

Steve Christie, a 15-year veteran, knows there are no excuses for missing field goals of 30 and 33 yards, even if they were into a swirling wind. So he didn’t make any.

“From that distance I need to make it,” he said after the Giants held on to beat the Packers, despite his problems.

Earlier, he missed badly from 49 yards with the wind at his back.

“Wind or otherwise, there’s no excuse,” he said. “I still have to drive it in there.”

It is not clear if Christie’s job is in danger, but he has not been particularly impressive after the team signed him the week of the opener to replace Todd France.

“I have to look at it again,” coach Tom Coughlin said of the field-goal miscues. “We missed them, that’s all I know.”
