Gonzaga outlasts Idaho

Gonzaga University needed two overtimes to end a three-match losing streak Friday afternoon, beating Idaho 2-1 for a non-conference win at Idaho’s Guy Wicks Field.

Twin sisters Sarah and Annie Hawkins hooked up in the first half to score the Bulldogs’ first goal.

The Vandals (2-8-0) tied in the second half when Lindsey Kihm picked up a ricochet off the Gonzaga goalpost and beat the goalkeeper to score her first career goal and Idaho’s first goal in four games. Gonzaga’s Jamie Blanche scored the winning goal at the 103-minute mark.

The Bulldogs (8-5-0), who outshot Idaho 19-12, host their conference opener against Portland (10-2-0) on Sunday. The Vandals return to conference play Sunday when they get a visit from Utah State (3-7-1, 0-1-1).

•Eastern Washington began Big Sky Conference play with a 0-0 double overtime tie against Montana (4-5-2, 0-0-1).

The Eagles (3-7-2, 0-0-1), who outshot the Grizzlies 18-14, were led by freshman Cyeeta Mott who had four shots on the day. Goalkeeper Tiera Como had four saves as she recorded her third shutout of the season.

The Eagles resume play Oct. 15, when they host Idaho State (5-3-3, 0-0-1).

•Washington State (5-4-2) lost its first Pacific-10 Conference match at Arizona (10-2-0) 3-1, surrendering the tying and winning goals within five minutes of each other.

Alix Rustrum gave WSU a 1-0 lead at the 41:20 mark, scoring from 12-yards out.

But Arizona’s Jennifer Klein and Kamaya Damwijk scored at 44:17 and 49:09, respectively, to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead.

Candice Wilks added an insurance goal at the 62:07 mark.

Washington State will play Arizona State at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium Sunday.

Volleyball

Senior Sanja Tomasevic led all players with 19 kills as top-ranked Washington (13-0, 5-0) defeated visiting Washington State (3-14, 0-5) 30-15, 30-17, 30-20 in Pac-10 Conference play.

The Cougars were led by Kelly Rosin’s eight kills. Jennifer Todd, Rosin, Kristin Kelly and Jen Barcus each had a pair of blocks.

The Cougars final non-conference match is Tuesday at the University of Idaho.

•Three Saint Mary’s (14-1, 3-0)players finished with double-figure kills as the 19th-ranked Gaels picked up a three-game West Coast Conference victory over Gonzaga (4-12, 0-3).

Lauren Armas led Gonzaga with 13 kills. Briawna Mueller posted three blocks while Jessica Herrera had 10 digs, marking the 15th match this season she has reached double-digits.

Gonzaga hosts the University of San Francisco tonight.

•North Idaho College fell in four games in a Scenic West Athletic Conference match at the College of Southern Idaho (33-1, 3-0).

Kara Kiefer led the Cardinals (20-13, 1-2) with 11 kills and six digs. Kelsey Kinzer added six digs.

Men’s soccer

No. 14 Washington (9-3-1, 2-0-0) upset No. 3 California (7-1-2, 0-1-1) 3-0 in a Pac-10 Conference game at Seattle.

Hockey

Lief Sherman scored the only goal for the Spokane Braves (2-6-1) in a 7-1 loss to the Castlegar Rebels (7-2) at Castlegar.

The Braves host Beaver Valley tonight.
