Davenport loses in Kremlin Cup semis

A weakened Lindsay Davenport lost to defending champion Anastasia Myskina 6-4, 7-6 (1) Saturday in the Kremlin Cup tennis semifinals at Moscow, but will still regain the No. 1 ranking next week.

Elena Dementieva defeated Elena Bovina 6-4, 7-5 in the other semifinal and will face Myskina in the first all-Russian final at the Kremlin Cup.

“Jerome Haehnel overcame neck pain to defeat countryman Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-7 (5), 7-6 (4), 7-6 (1) in one semifinal at the Open de Mosellein in Metz, France, and Richard Gasquet, 18, beat Jeff Morrison of the United States 6-1, 6-4 in the other semifinal to set up an all-French final.

“Argentina’s Guillermo Canas beat Tommy Haas of Germany 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the final of the CA Trophy at Vienna, Austria.

The sixth-seeded Canas will face Spain’s Feliciano Lopez, who beat Davide Sangiunetti of Italy 6-3, 6-3.

“Roger Federer, Andy Roddick and Lleyton Hewitt – the world’s top three ranked players – pulled out of next week’s Madrid (Spain) Masters in another wave of withdrawals from the hard-court tournament.

“Czech teenager Nicole Vaidisova advanced to the final of the Tashkent (Uzbekistan) Open, beating second-seeded Meghann Shaughnessy of the United States 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 (1).

U.S. blanks Mexico

Angela Hucles scored in the 36th minute to lead the U.S. women’s national soccer team over Mexico 1-0 in Kansas City, Mo.

“Austria’s Doresia Krings won the parallel giant slalom in Soelden, Austria, to capture a season-opening event in World Cup snowboarding.

“Normann Stadler of Germany seized the lead in the bike ride and held on in the marathon for a 10-minute margin of victory at the Ironman Triathlon World Championship at Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

“Cozy Guy rallied to win the $250,000 California Cup Classic by three-quarters of a length over Lava Man at Arcadia, Calif., giving trainer Dan Hendricks his biggest victory since being paralyzed in an accident three months ago.
