Driver in crash told police he’d been drinking

From staff reports

A 79-year-old man who hit three pedestrians Friday night told Spokane Police that he had been drinking at a bar before the accident.

Kiel Adonis Ganoung was booked into jail on charges of vehicular assault after allegedly driving his 2-ton Ford Ranger pickup into three people who were crossing west to east on Wall Street at the intersection of Princeton Avenue to go to a neighborhood restaurant, police said in a news release.

The impact of the collision catapulted the three people onto the hood and, when the driver slammed on his brakes, the victims were thrown onto the pavement, authorities reported.

Late Saturday afternoon, one victim, a 67-year-old woman, was upgraded from critical to serious condition, Spokane Police spokesman Dick Cottam said.

Her 73-year-old husband remained in critical condition, Cottam said.

The two were being treated for leg fractures as well as head and possible internal injuries, police said.

The other woman allegedly hit by Ganoung was in stable condition. The truck missed a man who was with the group.

Witnesses told police the truck was weaving when it headed north on Wall at about 6:45 p.m.

The pedestrians were crossing near the Wall Street Diner in an area that is directly under a streetlight.

A driver traveling behind Ganoung said the truck’s driver didn’t appear to apply his brakes until after he’d actually struck the group, police said.
