EWU sports deserve top billing

The Spokesman-Review

I’m not going to waste a lot of space here, because I would rather see you give it to covering the successes of the EWU Eagles football, golf and volleyball teams.

All three teams are having a great season, but you’d never know that unless you are the type of reader who reads every single little article in The Spokesman-Review sports section. As an EWU alum, Eagle Athletic Member and one who believes in supporting the home team, I’d like to see better placement of EWU sports reports in the paper.

In particular, I realize WSU has a larger student body – and is in a higher division – but I bet the 26,000 EWU alumni, as well as countless parents and friends who actually live and work in Spokane and surrounding areas, would be pleased to see EWU receive credit when credit is due. WSU seems to get the middle, top section of the front page of the sports page, as well as full color photos and further commentary in the inner pages of the sports section, even when they lose, while the Eastern Eagles – who appear to be having one heck of a season in Big Sky play in all fall sports – still only rank the bottom left corner of the front page even when they win.

These students represent some of the best and brightest of our own. There are more EWU students and athletes from Spokane and Eastern Washington than at any other Washington university.

Obviously, EWU knows how to recognize talent in its own back yard. Last time I checked – which would have been Wednesday, since I only get the weekend plus subscription since the local morning TV news has such a great review of local sports, news and other items of local interest – the name of the paper is “The Spokesman-Review” (meaning that the Spokane-area news, teams and issues should be of top importance), not the Pullman Gazette, Review or Sports Reporter. Enough is enough – let’s give credit where credit is due, on the top front section of the Sports Page – whether it is EWU, WSU or, upon occasion, those valiant and ever-determined Huskies.
