Fairly’s insight appreciated
This is in response to Wm. J. Hiatt’s letter Oct 10 (“M’s need new broadcasters”) regarding his opinion of Ron Fairly as an announcer for the Mariners.
Ron Fairly is a “color man,” not an announcer. I feel he does his job excellently. His personal experience as a former big league all-star outfielder with the Los Angeles Dodgers adds insight into the telecasts that makes the game fun beyond the regular play of the game.
One instance was his telling of an incident with manager Walter Alston and pitcher Don Drysdale, when Alston told Drysdale to “put the batter on,” and Drysdale hit the batter in the ribs on the next pitch. When questioned after the inning by Alston, Drysdale explained, “You said put him on. I couldn’t see any reason to waste four pitches.” On many occasions, Fairly’s wit and recall of past experiences make the game more exciting. I’m sorry Mr. Hiatt, there are two sides to every apple. Mine tastes good, but yours just happens to have a worm hole.
