Montana-Western sends Carroll to another rare setback

Associated Press

HELENA, Mont. — Josh Shrum had 140 yards in total offense and Eric Zahler kicked four field goals, including a 54-yarder, to lead Montana-Western to a 26-17 upset of Carroll College Saturday.

It was the second straight loss for the fifth-ranked Saints (5-2, 3-2 Frontier), who once were ranked No. 1 in the NAIA and had a 24-game winning streak.

No. 20 Montana-Western (5-2, 5-1) recorded its first two scores after Carroll turnovers.

Carroll’s defensive line didn’t give Saints quarterback Tyler Emmert much time to pass. Emmert was sacked five times and intercepted twice.

Western built a 17-0 halftime lead before Carroll pulled within 17-10 on a 1-yard TD run by Ryan Grosulak with 30 seconds left in the third quarter.

Zahler kicked fourth-quarter field goals of 42 and 54 yards for a 23-10 lead.
