Lybbert’s goal leads Cardinals

Korrianne Lybbert scored off an assist from Sara Massey in the second minute, and visiting Medical Lake (5-5 Great Northern League) held off Lakeside (4-7) for the remaining 78 minutes to earn a 1-0 girls soccer win at Nine Mile Falls on Saturday.

Rachel Maddox recorded the shutout for ML, saving six of Lakeside’s 13 shots.

With the victory, the Cardinals move into third place in the GNL with two games remaining.

•Diane Kasinger kept Riverside perfect on the league slate, saving four shots in the visiting Rams’ (10-0) 1-0 win over Deer Park (3-8). The win keeps the Rams a point ahead of Pullman, with the two teams meeting Thursday at Riverside. … Visiting Pullman (9-1) scored three times in the second half to rout Chewelah (3-7) 5-0. Katie Spangenberg scored twice to lead the Greyhounds’ charge, and Kaara Heim added a goal and an assist for Pullman.

Jenny Tibbals put Moscow on her back, scoring a hat trick to lift the Bears into the Idaho 4A state tournament with a 4-2 win over Emmett at Lewiston.

Tibbals scored in the 39th minute off an assist from Emma Schmidt to tie the match at 1.

Tibbals put the Bears (13-5-1) ahead in the 51st minute with a penalty kick, and Mia Tibbals scored in the 61st minute to put the match away.

Jenny Tibbals’ third goal in the 66th minute gave her 25 on the season.

Jennifer Putnam scored twice to lead Bonners Ferry to a 3-0 win over St. Maries, advancing the Badgers into the 3A state tournament.

Both of Putnam’s goals came in the second half during the winner-to-state match played at Skyway Elementary in Coeur d’Alene.

•In 5A, at the Capital Soccer Complex in Boise, Region I champ Coeur d’Alene (8-7-2) goes against District III runner-up Timberline; Centennial, a 4-1 play-win winner over Lake City, will meet defending champ Boise; Highland goes against Eagle; and Idaho Falls faces Borah.

In 4A, Region I champ Sandpoint (15-2-3) will meet District III champ Kuna; Moscow (13-5-1), a play-in winner Saturday, will take on Wood River; Blackfoot meets defending champ Century; and Vallivue opens against Hillcrest.

In 3A, Bonners Ferry (10-5-0) will open against District VI runner-up Shelley. In other openers, Community School takes on Payette; defending champ American Falls goes against McCall-Donnelly; and Teton meets Marsh Valley.

Volleyball

Pullman moved into second place in the Great Northern League with a 25-23, 20-25, 25-8, 25-20 win over visiting Chewelah (6-3).

Grethe Vogel had 15 kills for the Greyhounds (7-2), and Amy Small had 33 assists.

Katie Hinrichs paced Pullman’s defense with 22 digs. The Greyhounds are a game behind Colville (8-1), with Pullman visiting the Indians on Saturday.

Boys soccer

Sandpoint advanced to the 4A state tournament with a 3-0 win over Vallivue of Boise at Lewiston.

Michael Brewer scored twice, Brandon Eddy had a goal and an assist and Chase Lowther assisted on two scores to keep the Bulldogs’ season alive.

•After a six-year absence, Lake City is back in the 5A state tournament after a 2-0 win over Bishop Kelly of Boise.

Jake Williamson scored in the 42nd minute off an assist from Pat Jewell, and Jewell put the match away with a goal in the 70th minute for the Timberwolves (9-9-2).

•The state tourney begins Thursday at Boise.

In first-round matches, Region I champ and 2003 state runner-up Coeur d’Alene (14-2-1) will take on District III runner-up Boise; Lake City will meet District III champ Centennial; defending champ Idaho Falls takes on Borah; and Skyline goes against Eagle.

In 4A at the same site in Boise, Sandpoint (14-4-1), a play-in qualifier Saturday, will meet District IV-V champ Burley; Region I champ Moscow (12-4-0) meets Nampa; Blackfoot goes against Century; and Skyview faces Wood River.
