Webb steps in, leads Wildcats past Huskers

Backup quarterback Allen Webb rushed for 147 yards and scored four times to lead the Kansas State Wildcats past the Nebraska Cornhuskers 45-21 Saturday in Manhattan, Kan. Webb, starting in place of injured Dylan Meier, scored on runs of 13, 8, 1 and 9 yards for Kansas State (3-4, 1-3 Big 12), which broke a three-game losing streak. He would have tied Kansas State’s single-game record with five TDs if he hadn’t fumbled as he was starting to cross the goal line in the fourth quarter. Nebraska (4-3, 2-2) remains winless in Big 12 road games under first-year head coach Bill Callahan.

East

Pittsburgh 41, Rutgers 17: At Pittsburgh, Tyler Palko threw for three touchdowns, and Josh Lay returned an interception 82 yards for another score as the Panthers (5-2, 3-1 Big East) beat the Scarlet Knights (4-3, 1-2). Rutgers was trying for its first three-game winning streak since 1992.

Connecticut 45, Temple 31: At East Hartford, Conn., Dan Orlovsky threw for 260 yards and two touchdowns and Cornell Brockington rushed for two more scores to lead the Huskies (5-2, 2-2 Big East) to a win over the Owls (1-7, 0-3).

Navy 14, Rice 13: At Annapolis, Md., quarterback Aaron Polanco ran for a career-high 179 yards and the Midshipmen (6-1) beat the Owls (3-4). Rice pulled within one on an 11-yard TD pass from freshman Joel Armstrong to Ed Bailey with 4:41 remaining, but Brennan Landry missed the point after and Navy held on.

South

Clemson 10, Maryland 7: At Clemson, S.C., Reggie Merriweather’s 2-yard touchdown run with 23 seconds left lifted the Tigers (3-4, 2-3 ACC) to a victory over the Terrapins (3-4, 1-3). Maryland has its first three-game losing streak under Coach Ralph Friedgen.

Vanderbilt 19, Eastern Kentucky 7: At Nashville, Tenn., Kwane Doster ran for 117 yards and Jay Cutler threw for a touchdown and ran for another as the Commodores (2-5) held off the Division I-AA Colonels (3-4).

Texas-El Paso 44, Louisiana Tech 27: At Ruston, La., Jordan Palmer passed for 259 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Miners (5-2, 3-1 WAC) to a win over the Bulldogs (4-4, 3-1).

Tulane 59, Alabama-Birmingham 55: At New Orleans, Lester Ricard set a Tulane single-game record with six touchdown passes and also had 417 passing yards to lead the Green Wave (2-4, 1-3 CUSA) to an upset win over the Blazers (5-2, 3-1).

Southern Mississippi 51, East Carolina 10: At Hattiesburg, Miss., Damion Carter threw for two touchdowns and the Golden Eagles (6-1, 4-0 CUSA) held the Pirates (2-5, 1-3) to minus three yards rushing in a victory.

Midwest

Ohio St. 30, Indiana 7: At Columbus, Ohio, Troy Smith threw two touchdown passes and Tony Pittman ran for 144 yards — both in their first collegiate starts — to lead Ohio State (4-3, 1-3 Big Ten) to a win over the Hoosiers (2-5, 0-4), ending the Buckeyes’ three-game losing skid.

Minnesota 45, Illinois 0: At Minneapolis, Marion Barber III ran for two touchdowns and threw for another, helping guide the Golden Gophers (6-2, 3-2 Big Ten) to a homecoming win over the Fighting Illini (2-6, 0-5). The Illini dropped their 13th consecutive Big Ten game.

Northern Illinois 59, Western Michigan 38: At Kalamazoo, Mich., Josh Haldi threw for a career-high 333 yards and six touchdowns, leading the Huskies (6-2, 5-0 MAC) to a win over the Broncos (1-6, 0-4).

Marshall 48, Buffalo 14: At Huntington, W.Va., Stan Hill threw four TD passes to lead the Thundering Herd (4-3, 4-0 MAC) to a win over the Bulls (1-7, 1-5).

Akron 35, Ball St. 23: At Akron, Ohio, Brett Biggs rushed for 195 yards and scored three touchdowns, and Domenik Hixon scored twice to lead the Zips (4-4, 4-1 MAC) to a win over the Cardinals (1-7, 1-4).

Miami (Ohio) 43, Cent. Florida 7: At Oxford, Ohio, Josh Betts passed for 288 yards and a score, and Brandon Murphy and Luke Clemens rushed for two touchdowns apiece as the RedHawks (5-3, 4-1 MAC) defeated the Golden Knights (0-7, 0-4).

Toledo 27, Central Michigan 22: At Toledo, Ohio, Lance Moore caught a 43-yard touchdown pass and returned a punt 89 yards for a score to lead the Rockets (6-2, 5-0 MAC) to a win over the Chippewas (2-5, 1-3).

Cincinnati 49, Memphis 10: At Cincinnati, Gino Guidugli passed for three scores and Richard Hall scored two touchdowns to lead the Bearcats (3-4, 2-2 CUSA) to a rout of the Tigers (5-2, 2-2).

Bowling Green 41, Ohio 16: At Athens, Ohio, Omar Jacobs passed for 389 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a score to lead the Falcons (5-2, 3-1 MAC) to a victory over the Bobcats (3-5, 1-4).

Southwest

Iowa State 26, Baylor 25: At Waco, Texas, Stevie Hicks scored on a 5-yard run with 41 seconds left and the Cyclones (3-4, 1-3 Big 12) ended their 13-game Big 12 losing streak with a win over the Bears (2-5, 0-4).

Texas Christian 34, Houston 27: At Fort Worth, Texas, Tye Gunn came off the bench to run for two touchdowns and throw for two more to lead the Horned Frogs (4-3, 2-2 CUSA) to a victory over the Cougars (1-6, 1-3).

Far West

BYU 41, Air Force 24: At Air Force Academy, Colo., John Beck threw for 319 yards and four touchdowns, and Curtis Brown ran for 128 yards to help the Cougars (4-4, 3-1 MWC) to a victory over the Falcons (3-4, 2-2).

New Mexico 19, San Diego State 9: At Albuquerque, N.M., Kole McKamey ran for a touchdown and threw for another and the Lobos (4-4, 2-2 MWC) put on a dominating performance in a win over the Aztecs (2-5, 0-3). New Mexico’s defense had a season-high five sacks, intercepted two passes, held the Aztecs to minus 19 yards rushing and 146 total yards.

Nevada 54, Tulsa 48: At Reno, Nev., Tulsa running back Brandon Diles fumbled out of the end zone from the 1-yard line in triple overtime to hand the Wolf Pack (4-4, 2-2 WAC) a victory over the Golden Hurricanes (1-6, 0-3).
