Wolverines have Hart

Freshman Michael Hart rushed for 206 yards and Garrett Rivas hit a 35-yard field goal with 2:45 to go to lift No. 13 Michigan to a 16-14 win over No. 12 Purdue on Saturday in West Lafayette, Ind.

Hart broke Ricky Powers’ record for rushing yards by a Michigan freshman and also caught a touchdown pass to help the Wolverines (7-1, 5-0 Big Ten) keep pace with No. 6 Wisconsin atop the conference.

The scene was all too familiar for Purdue (5-2, 2-2), which again had a costly fumble late to lose its second game in a row after starting the season with five straight wins for the first time since 1945.

After Rivas’ field goal, Purdue quarterback Kyle Orton hit receiver Dorien Bryant on a crossing pattern that moved the Boilermakers into Michigan territory.

But Michigan defensive back Markus Curry sent Bryant flying with a low hit and Ernest Shazor hit him high, forcing a fumble that Leon Hall recovered to seal the win.

(2) Oklahoma 41, Kansas 10

Jason White threw for 389 yards and four touchdowns against a defense geared up to stop Adrian Peterson, and the Sooners (7-0, 4-0 Big 12) defeated the Jayhawks (3-4, 1-3) in Norman, Okla.

Peterson gained 126 yards on 22 carries – all but 23 coming in the fourth quarter.

(3) Auburn 42, Kentucky 10

Carnell Williams rushed for 149 yards and two touchdowns and the Tigers (8-0, 5-0 SEC) allowed only 110 yards in a rout of the Wildcats (1-6, 0-4) in Auburn, Ala.

Ronnie Brown also rushed for two TDs for the Tigers.

(4) Miami 45, N.C. State 31

Brock Berlin tied a school record with five TD passes and Devin Hester returned the opening kickoff 100 yards for another score, helping the No. 4 Hurricanes (6-0, 3-0 ACC) turn back the Wolfpack (4-3, 3-2) in Raleigh, N.C.

Miami allowed 440 yards – 299 in the first half alone – but remained the only team in the conference without a loss.

(5) Florida St. 20, Wake Forest 17

Xavier Beitia kicked a 22-yard field goal with 1:03 to play to help the Seminoles (6-1, 4-1 ACC) pull off a surprisingly close win over the Demon Deacons (3-4, 0-4) in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Seminoles quarterback Wyatt Sexton had a miserable day, committing three costly turnovers that nearly cost Florida State the game.

(6) Wisconsin 24, Northwestern 12

Anthony Davis rushed for two touchdowns and the Badgers (8-0, 5-0 Big Ten) beat the Wildcats (3-4, 2-2) in Madison, Wis., with star defensive end Erasmus James and his pass-rushing partner Jonathan Welsh on the sideline.

Both were out with ankle injuries but that didn’t prevent the Badgers from going 8-0 for just the fourth time in the program’s 115-year history.

(8) Texas 51, Texas Tech 21

Vince Young had a career-high 305 yards of total offense, ran for four touchdowns and threw for another to lead the Longhorns (6-1, 3-1 Big 12) over the Red Raiders (4-3, 3-2) in Lubbock, Texas.

Cedric Benson, the nation’s leading rusher coming in, finished with 168 yards on 38 carries and one touchdown for Texas.

(9) Utah 63, UNLV 28

Morgan Scalley returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown and Alex Smith threw for three TDs and ran 70 yards for another, leading the Utes (7-0, 3-0 MWC) past the Rebels (2-6, 1-3) in Salt Lake City.

(10) Georgia 20, Arkansas 14

David Greene threw for a career-high 382 yards and two touchdowns, Thomas Brown rushed for 107 yards and the Bulldogs (6-1, 3-1 SEC) held off the Razorbacks (3-4, 1-3) in Fayetteville, Ark.

(11) Tennessee 17, Alabama 13

Tennessee turned to its defense to turn back a late rally by the Crimson Tied (5-3, 2-3 SEC) and the Volunteers (6-1, 4-1) held on for a victory in Knoxville, Tenn.

Alabama drove to the Tennessee 37 on its final possession, but Corey Campbell secured the win with an interception.

(14) Virginia 37, Duke 16

Alvin Pearman ran for a career-high 223 yards and a touchdown, lifting the Cavaliers (6-1, 3-1 ACC) past the Blue Devils (1-6, 0-4) in Durham, N.C.

Wali Lundy added 82 yards rushing and two scores for the Cavaliers, who piled up 511 yards – 348 on the ground.

(17) Texas A&M 29, Colorado 26 (OT)

Eric Pegram kicked a 19-yard field goal in overtime and Lee Foliaki recovered a fumble on Colorado’s possession, giving the Aggies (6-1, 4-0 Big 12) a victory over the Buffaloes (4-3, 1-3) in College Station, Texas.

(19) Boise State 33, Fresno State 16

Jared Zabransky passed for 225 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score to lead the Broncos (7-0, 4-0 WAC) to a victory over the Bulldogs (3-3, 0-3) in Boise.

Lee Marks rushed for 112 yards on 21 carries for BSU. The Broncos held Fresno State to 17 yards rushing and 188 yards of total offense.

(22) Oklahoma State 20, Missouri 17

Jason Ricks kicked a 28-yard field goal with 55 seconds left and the Cowboys (6-1, 3-1 Big 12) rallied from a 17-point deficit to beat the Tigers (4-3, 20-2) in Columbia, Mo.

The Cowboys drove 78 yards to set up the winning kick.

Boston College 24, (24) Notre Dame 23

Paul Peterson threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Tony Gonzalez with 54 seconds left to give the Eagles (5-2) a victory over the Fighting Irish (5-3) in South Bend, Ind.

The Eagles dominated the second half, outgaining the Irish 319 yards to 122 yards.
