Zombies hit the mall in remake

 (The Spokesman-Review)

“Dawn of the Dead”

•••1/2

Zack Snyder’s update of George Romero’s 1978 zombie classic does have a sense of style, even if it is a bit derivative. He has wisely updated his film to avoid all

of Romero’s heavy messages regarding consumerism. An unexplained plague of the undead still wreaks havoc, a small group of non-zombies

still takes refuge in a shopping mall, and the ending remains open. But you have to wait for the closing credits to be certain. This much is for sure: Snyder doesn’t let us off easily. (DVD, VHS; 1:40; rated R for pervasive strong horror violence and gore, language, sexuality)

“21 Jump Street: The Complete First Season”

•••

This FOX show about narcs infiltrating high school intro-

duced us to the likes of Johnny Depp, Holly Robinson (now Peete), Dustin Nguyen and Peter DeLuise. More a success of style than anything remotely resem-

bling substance, “21 Jump Street” is now mostly a curiosity. But as all 13 episodes (on four discs) of the original 1987 season show, Depp and Co. were more than simply an updated “Mod Squad.” The DVD features commentary by DeLuise and new interviews with creator Stephen Cannell and actors Robinson, Nguyen and Steven Williams. (DVD only; 9:45; not rated)

“White Chicks”

••1/2

After messing up a bodyguard assignment, two FBI agents (brothers Marlon and Shawn Wayans) go undercover as white-girl heiresses in an attempt to stave off a kidnapping. That’s as deep as things get. It’s strangethat the film ends up poking fun at race relations in a way that is more honest than most anything else . (DVD, VHS; 1:36; rated PG-13 for crude and sexual humor, language, drug content)
