Chiefs get goaltender, cut backup Irving

The Spokesman-Review

The Spokane Chiefs have acquired 18-year-old goaltender Kevin Opsahl from the Portland Winter Hawks for a sixth-round choice in the 2005 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft.

Opsahl (1-2) has appeared in three games this season, stopping 82 of 90 shots for a .911 save percentage and a 3.20 goals-against average. The Trail, British Columbia, product started last season as the Winter Hawks’ backup and appeared in seven games before being reassigned to Trail of the Junior B British Columbia Hockey League.

With the acquisition of Opsahl, goaltender Kirk Irving has been released from the Chiefs’ roster and is awaiting reassignment. Irving allowed six goals on 18 shots in his only Spokane appearance of the season, last Saturday against Kamloops.
