WSU soccer still overlooked

The Spokesman-Review

It was disappointing to open up Saturday’s The Spokesman-Review (Oct. 30) and go straight to the sports page (which I always do) and find a four-sentence summary of Washington State’s stunning upset over the 12th-ranked Washington women’s soccer team. There is no reason this game shouldn’t have been covered.

We have beaten or tied seven top 25 teams this season. Yet you have only covered one game and there was still no picture. The bleachers were full Friday afternoon and the hillside was packed with students, including the football team and many of their coaches. You did, however, manage to have enough space to run a 16-inch story on girls high school soccer, which is great. But you failed to even staff this Pac-10 matchup between the Cougs and Dawgs.

We have our final homestand next weekend, with an NCAA tournament berth at stake. I hope this is worth sending someone out to at least cover the game. I used to nag the former sports editor about equal coverage of women’s sports. I thought maybe it would improve when Joe Palmquist took over.
