Storm lose just second at home

Olympian Yolanda Griffith scored 18 points and paced a balanced attack, leading the Sacramento Monarchs to a 73-65 victory over the Seattle Storm on Wednesday night at Seattle.

Tangela Smith added 14 points for the Monarchs, who reached the .500 mark (13-13) for the first time since May 22, when they were 1-1.

Seattle lost at Key Arena for just the second time this season.

The Storm played without 2003 WNBA most valuable player Lauren Jackson, who returned to her native Australia. Jackson left to visit her seriously ill grandmother.

Jackson, who also was placed on the injured list with a sprained right foot, is expected to miss three games.

Lynx 72, Comets 64: At Houston, Nicole Ohlde scored 16 points and Helen Darling added 14 to lead Minnesota to its first win in Houston.

Svetlana Ambrosimova and Tamika Williams each scored 12 for the Lynx (16-11), who improved to 3-0 against the Comets this season. Minnesota made 7 of 16 3-pointers.

Sheryl Swoopes scored a game-high 22 points for Houston (12-15) and Tina Thompson added 19.

Sting 62, Sun 55: At Charlotte, N.C., three-time Olympian Dawn Staley led the charge for the Charlotte.

Staley scored 12 points and recorded her 1,000th career assist in directing the Sting to a win over Connecticut.

Staley dished out seven assists four days after winning her third consecutive gold for the U.S. Olympic team.

Mercury 63, Shock 58: At Auburn Hills, Mich., Anna DeForge and Plennete Pierson each scored 16 points and Diana Taurasi added 14 as Phoenix beat defending champion Detroit.

Detroit’s Ruth Riley left the game late in the first half with an injured right elbow and did not return.

Fever 75, Mystics 58: At Washington, Tamika Catchings returned from the Athens Olympics and notched 16 points, seven assists and six rebounds to help Indiana snap a six-game losing streak with a win over Washington.

Natalie Williams added 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Fever.

Sparks 77, Silver Stars 69: At Los Angeles, Lisa Leslie had 27 points and 13 rebounds to lead Los Angeles to a victory over San Antonio.

Tamecka Dixon added 15 points, and Christi Thomas and Tamika Whitmore each scored 13 for the Sparks, who won their sixth consecutive game and 12th of 13.

LaToya Thomas led the Silver Stars with 18 points.
