Connecticut 52, Murray State 14: At East Hartford, Conn., Dan Orlovsky threw for 382 yards and tied his own school record with five touchdown passes to lead the Huskies, who joined the Big East this season, to a win over the Division I-AA Racers (1-1).

Penn State 48, Akron 10: At State College, Pa., quarterback Zack Mills ran for a touchdown, caught a TD and threw two scoring passes to lead the Nittany Lions over the Zips. Tony Hunt rushed for 137 yards and a touchdown, and Austin Scott rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns for Penn State.

Rutgers 19, Michigan St. 14: At Piscataway, N.J., freshman Jeremy Ito kicked four field goals and Ryan Neill scored on a 31-yard interception return to lead the Scarlet Knights to a victory over the Spartans. The win was coach Greg Schiano’s biggest since coming to Rutgers in December 2000, and it gave the Scarlet Knights renewed hope for their first winning season since 1992.

Navy 27, Duke 12: At Annapolis, Md., Aaron Polanco threw a touchdown pass, ran for another score and finished with 259 yards of total offense to help the Midshipmen beat the Blue Devils. Polanco ran for 130 yards on 22 carries and was 8 of 9 for 129 yards, including a 58-yard touchdown pass to Jason Tomlinson at the end of the first half. Kyle Eckel fumbled twice in the first half for Navy, but scored on a pair of 3-yard runs in the second half. He finished with 100 yards on 23 carries.

South

Memphis 20, Mississippi 13: At Oxford, Miss., Danny Wimprine threw for 266 yards, including a fourth-quarter touchdown to Tavares Gideon, and DeAngelo Williams ran for 118 yards to lead the Tigers to a victory over the Rebels. Memphis controlled the game throughout and ruined the first career start for Mississippi’s Micheal Spurlock, who is trying to replace Eli Manning at quarterback. Spurlock was 11-of-31 passing for 182 yards.

South Carolina 31, Vanderbilt 6: At Nashville, Tenn., Dondrial Pinkins ran for a touchdown and threw for another to lead the Gamecocks to a win over Vanderbilt, the 14th straight time the Commodores have lost their SEC opener.

Georgia Tech 28, Samford 7: At Atlanta, P.J. Daniels rushed for 169 yards and two touchdowns and Reggie Ball passed for two touchdowns as the Yellow Jackets overwhelmed the Division I-AA Bulldogs (1-1).

North Carolina 49, William & Mary 38: At Chapel Hill, N.C., Ronnie McGill rushed for three fourth-quarter touchdowns and the Tar Heels rallied from a 10-point third-quarter deficit to beat the Division I-AA Tribe.

North Carolina State 42, Richmond 0: At Raleigh, N.C., Jay Davis threw two touchdown passes in his first chance as Philip Rivers’ replacement, leading the Wolfpack past the Division I-AA Spiders.

Mississippi St. 28, Tulane 7: At Starkville, Miss., Sylvester Croom won his first game as the Bulldogs’ coach, with Jerious Norwood running for 112 yards and a touchdown in a victory over the Green Wave.

UAB 56, Baylor 14: At Birmingham, Ala., Darrell Hackney threw three touchdown passes and ran for one score to lead the Blazers to a victory over the Bears. UAB reached its highest point total since becoming a Division I-A team in 1996.

Midwest

Iowa St. 23, N. Iowa 0: At Ames, Iowa, Bret Meyer threw a touchdown pass in his first start, Stevie Hicks ran for 111 yards and the Cyclones won for the first time in a year, beating the Panthers.

Illinois 52, Florida A&M 13: At Champaign, Ill., Pierre Thomas ran for 143 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Fighting Illini to a lopsided win over the Division I-AA Rattlers, who played without four starters serving suspensions for playing games while academically ineligible.

Ohio 42, VMI 14: At Athens, Ohio, Ryan Hawk passed for 223 yards and three touchdowns, and Kalvin McRae ran for 100 yards and scored twice to lead the Bobcats over the Keydets. Justin Roush added 130 yards rushing for the Bobcats, who also got two defensive touchdowns.

Indiana 41, Central Michigan 10: At Bloomington, Ind., Tracy Porter picked off two passes, returning one 96 yards for a touchdown, and BenJarvus Green-Ellis ran for 97 yards and another score to give the Hoosiers a win over the Chippewas.

Kansas 21, Tulsa 3: At Lawrence, Kan., Adam Barmann threw a touchdown pass and ran for another score, igniting a sluggish Kansas offense and leading the Jayhawks past the Golden Hurricane. Held to 80 total yards and one field goal in a ragged first half of their opener, the Jayhawks took advantage of Tulsa mistakes to put the game away with a touchdown and a safety in the fourth quarter.

Nebraska 56, Western Illinois 17: At Lincoln, Neb., Joe Dailey threw for four touchdowns and ran for two others, and Cory Ross and Tierre Green each rushed for more than 100 yards to lead the Cornhuskers past the Division I-AA Leathernecks. New Nebraska coach Bill Callahan promised to end the plodding ways of the triple-option offense when he took over for Frank Solich, and he delivered. All of Dailey’s TD passes and his first scoring run came in the opening 20 minutes.

Texas Tech 27, SMU 13: At Dallas, Sonny Cumbie, the latest quarterback plugged into Texas Tech’s passing machine, threw for 470 yards and four touchdowns, yet most of the scoring came in the second half as the Red Raiders slowly pulled away from the Mustangs for a victory.

Far West

Wyoming 53, Appalachian State 7: At Laramie, Wyo., Corey Bramlet threw for two touchdowns and 239 yards in his first career start and the Cowboys routed the Division I-AA Mountaineers. Wyoming gained 537 yards, 318 in the first half, and jumped out to a 41-0 lead.

Brigham Young 20, Notre Dame 17: At Provo, Utah, Matt Berry threw a 42-yard touchdown pass and a clutch 37-yard completion in the final minutes to Todd Watkins as the Cougars held on for a victory over the Fighting Irish. The Fighting Irish were about to get a final chance with BYU facing a third-and-8 play from its own 25. But Berry threw a long pass toward the Notre Dame sideline that Watkins leaped to pull in and give BYU a first down with 1:34 remaining.
