Upcoming Oscar contenders

Many films considered to be best-picture contenders this year have yet to be released. Among those receiving early Academy Award buzz (release dates subject to change):

“Ray” (Oct. 29): This unvarnished tale of the late blues singer Ray Charles stars Jamie Foxx, who is being touted for best actor and also could get a nod as best supporting actor for “Collateral.”

“Alexander” (Nov. 5): Oliver Stone’s sword-and-sandal epic about the young Macedonian general (Colin Farrell). With Anthony Hopkins and Angelina Jolie.

“The Aviator” (November, tba): Martin Scorcese directs this biopic about billionaire industrialist/pilotfilm producer Howard Hughes (Leonardo DiCaprio).

“Finding Neverland” (November, tba): Scottish playwright J.M. Barrie (Johnny Depp ) brings Peter Pan to life. Co-starring Dustin Hoffman, Julie Christie and Kate Winslet.

“Kinsey” (November, tba): Pioneering sexual behavior expert Alfred Kinsey (Liam Neeson) shocks the nation with his 1948 study on men. With Laura Linney.

“Closer” (Dec. 3): Director Mike Nichols’ erotically charged story of love, loneliness and betrayal, featuring Julia Roberts, Jude Law and Natalie Portman.

“Beyond the Sea” (Dec. 10): Kevin Spacey produced, directed and stars in the life story of singer Bobby Darin.

“The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou” (Dec. 24): Bill Murray is an eccentric oceanographer trying to track down a shark that ate his partner while filming a documentary of their latest adventure. Cate Blanchett co-stars.
