WWU edges Fort Lewis 27-25
The Western Washington Vikings presented football coach Rob Smith with his 100th career victory with a 27-25 victory over Fort Lewis when the visiting Skyhawks missed a 31-yard field goal on the final play of the season opener in Bellingham.
Smith, 100-52-1 in his career at Western, joins Don James and Frosty Westering as the third coach to get 100 victories while coaching in the state of Washington.
The Vikings led 14-13 lead at halftime which they increased to 21-13 midway through the third quarter on a blocked punt.
Forst Lewis scored but missed a two-point conversion to close within 21-19 before Michael Koenen kicked a pair of field goals to give the Vikings their final points.
Western had 466 yards of total offense.
