Cal rides Arrington to win over Aggies

Associated Press

J.J. Arrington ran for 177 yards and three touchdowns, and Aaron Rodgers completed 19 of 26 passes for 260 yards and two scores in No. 12 California’s 41-14 victory over New Mexico State on Saturday in Berkeley, Calif.

Chase Lyman made four receptions for 111 yards with a touchdown and a two-point conversion for the Golden Bears (2-0), who played their only home game at Memorial Stadium until they host UCLA on Oct. 16.

Arrington now has six rushing TDs in two games this season, including a 69-yard burst midway through the third quarter.

The Bears lost two first-half fumbles, but still outgained the Aggies 353-96 in the half and didn’t punt until their first series of the second half.

The Bears drew 58,949, the largest crowd for a Cal home opener in school history by nearly 3,000 fans.

UCLA 35, Illinois 17

Drew Olson threw three touchdown passes and Maurice Drew rushed for 142 yards to help the Bruins (1-1) snap a six-game losing streak with a win over the Fighting Illini (1-1) in Champaign, Ill.

Olson completed scoring passes of 41 and 14 yards to Craig Bragg in the first half and threw a 15-yard score to Maurice Lewis in the fourth quarter.

Manuel White added 97 yards rushing for the Bruins, who had 477 yards of total offense. Olson finished 14 of 21 for 208 yards.

Arizona St. 30, Northwestern 21

Andrew Walter threw for 292 yards and three touchdowns and the Sun Devils (2-0) held the Wildcats’ tandem of quarterback Brett Basanez and receiver Jonathan Fields in check en route to a win in Evanston, Ill.

Walter connected with speedy wide receiver Derek Hagan for two long scoring plays that gave the Sun Devils the lead for good in the first half.

Basanez finished with 21-for-38 passing for 238 yards — less than half of the school-record 513 passing yards he had in the opener — and was held to just 75 yards in the first half when the Wildcats (0-2) fell behind. Fields, who had 202 receiving yards a week earlier, was limited to just 32 yards on five catches.

Stanford 37, BYU 10

Trent Edwards passed for a career-high 297 yards and three touchdowns, and T.J. Rushing returned a kickoff 99 yards for a score as the Cardinal (2-0) cruised to a victory over the Cougars (1-1) in Stanford, Calif.

Alex Smith, Justin McCullum and Evan Moore caught scoring passes from Edwards, who was 20 of 41 to dominate his aerial duel with Jason Beck, BYU’s third-string quarterback.

The Cardinal fell behind 10-0 before flattening the mistake-prone Cougars (1-1), who committed seven turnovers and 14 penalties for 125 yards.

Stanford took the lead for good on Smith’s 2-yard TD catch in the second quarter. McCullum caught a 21-yard scoring pass in the third, and the 6-foot-7 Moore outjumped his defender to snare a 25-yard TD throw in the fourth.
