SALMO-PRIEST WILDERNESS

The Spokesman-Review

Celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Wilderness and the 20th anniversary of the Washington Wilderness Act by rolling up your sleeves and joining a work party to spruce up trails in the Salmo-Priest Wilderness next weekend. The Salmo is the only designated wilderness in northeastern Washington.

The Colville National Forest is joining with several recreation groups starting Saturday, 10 a.m., at the Gypsy Meadows trailhead, followed by a potluck dinner and camping. Sunday will include a brief celebration, hikes and horse rides in wilderness and proposed wilderness areas. A carpool from Spokane will meet at Lewis and Clark High School Saturday at 7:30 a.m. Sign-up with Jeff Lambert of the Spokane Mountaineers, 999-5100, e-mail jlambert@envirosciencegroup.com or contact Forest Service coordinator Debbie Wilkins in Newport, (509) 447-7322.
