CV launches GSL season with ‘huge, huge win’ over Mead

One game at a time. Trite, but certainly true in the case of Central Valley High School’s football team.

During preseason predictions, the Bears were picked to finish sixth in the Greater Spokane League. In succession, beginning last Friday, they play the five teams ranked above them.

In something of a stunner, CV rallied by faking an extra point kick and going for two points to knock off top-pick Mead, 22-21.

Next up is No. 4 East Valley. Then in succession the Bears play games against No. 2 Shadle Park, No. 3 Lewis and Clark and No. 5 Gonzaga Prep.

“It was a huge win, a huge win,” said defensive back Zach Chesher, after Friday’s game. “Starting off we’ve got the top five ranked teams in the league for our first five games. Mead was No. 1, and we take them down. We’ve got East Valley next, so, on and on.”

The win over Mead was huge considering that it took nearly five quarters for the Bears to score their first touchdown of the season after giving up 42 points in two games.

Trailing 14-0 in the first 3:42 of the game with Mead, CV came alive with two drives to tie that consumed a total of 10 minutes, 40 seconds out of 12:15 midway through the first half.

“It happened last week, and we all got down,” said standout fullback/linebacker Tommy Kadoya, of a 28-0 first-half deficit to Sandpoint. “So I said, let’s keep our heads, and we’re not out of it yet.”

CV had the ball for less than four minutes of the first 15 minutes of the second half, and a negative-2 yards, before rallying from a 21-14 deficit to win with 1:01 remaining.

“I don’t think anyone expected us to win,” Kadoya said. “We knew if we played our A game we could do it. It was a good start in the GSL.”

Darting tailback Zach Evans, fullbacks Kadoya and Dane Knudson, like Evans a junior, combined for 164 of CV’s 190 rushing yards. Those yards came in fits and starts but produced the three scores.

Evans totaled 74 yards, including a clutch 11-yarder that set up the winning touch down.

Now the Bears (1-1) travel against the Knights (0-2) and coming off a 19-9 loss to Gonzaga Prep. EV rushed for just 120 yards, no one with more than 34. Jordan Jolley got EV’s touchdown in the fourth quarter.

University (0-2) draws the Panthers today at 7:15 p.m. as part of an Albi Stadium doubleheader. Blake Kenworthy scored both Titan touchdowns during last week’s game against Ferris. West Valley (0-2), which lost to Cheney, opens the twin bill against Lewis and Clark in a battle between the black and orange.

Freeman, a Northeast A League favorite, opened its season with a 27-0 win over Great Northern League team Deer Park.

Sophomore Andrew Dresback, who has replaced his graduated brother Jon at quarterback, passed for two touchdowns and rushed for another. Kevin Hatch rushed for 120 yards on 16 carries and had a 33-yard interception return.

Volleyball showdown looms

University — one of four teams to enter the week 3-0 in Greater Spokane League volleyball — faces another one of those four tonight when it entertains Ferris.

The Titans beat Shadle Park in a pivotal contest the week before, rallying from a first game loss to win in four. They built a 22-7 lead and won the second game 25-14 behind the all-around play of Mandy Daniels.

In game 3, led by Daidre Mendenhall‘s net play and Daniels’ eight straight serves, U-Hi broke an 11-all tie and went on to win 25-19.

U-Hi trailed 13-12 in game 4, but won the thriller 25-21, Daniels with 10 kills, including the match’s final four points.

Defending state champion Mead and Gonzaga Prep, which played the Saxons Tuesday, were the other unbeatens entering this week.

Central Valley and East Valley entered the week winless and West Valley was 1-2.
