Eastern gets first-ever soccer win over Idaho

The Spokesman-Review

Freshman Cyeeta Mott’s second goal of the season in the 24th minute of play enabled Eastern Washington to claim a 1-0 women’s soccer victory over University of Idaho at EWU’s Sports and Recreation Center playing field.

Mott received a pass in the box from teammate Kerstyn Dolack and snuck it past Vandals keeper Lindsay Smith to give the Eagles their first-ever win over Idaho. Idaho had won the previous seven meetings.

Idaho (1-4) missed on two chances to tie or win in the final 10 minutes. Ali South and Melissa Martinazzi each shot over the top of the crossbar.

EWU (3-4) enjoyed a 22-13 shots-on-goal advantage.

“They just outworked us,” Idaho coach Arby Busey said. “The game was played on a wet, sloppy field and it came down to the winner would be whoever was going to work the hardest. They were the better team today and it was a disappointing way to lose. We created when our backs were against the wall in the last five minutes, but it was too little, too late.”

•Jael Hagerott scored two goals to lead Whitworth College to a 3-1 Northwest Conference-opening victory over Whitman at Walla Walla.

Marissa Williams also scored for Pirates (2-2), ranked No. 9 regionally.

Whitman (3-2), ranked No. 24 nationally and No. 4 in the West region, fell to 3-2.

•Ariel Roop, Jamison Walton, Ashlee Strong and Kristen Kendall all scored second half goals to lead North Idaho College to a 4-0 NWAACC win over Columbia Basin at Pasco.

Oregon State University scored four second-half goals, including two within a 3:29 spurt, to blank Gonzaga University 6-0 in a non-conference match at Corvallis, Ore.

Oregon State (2-4) outshot Gonzaga (2-3) 21-13.

The loss was the most lopsided for the Bulldogs since a 7-0 setback to Washington in 1994.

•Garga Cacerta scored at the 81st minute to give North Idaho College a 1-0 win over Columbia Basin College in NWAACC play in Pasco.

Cacerta picked up the ball at the top of the box and dribbled to his left before firing a shot, which deflected off a CBC player and into the goal.
