Interfaith gathering for peace

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Spokane, 4340 W. Fort Wright Drive, is hosting the Interfaith Council Celebration of Peace 2004 on Tuesday.

Mark Peterson of KXLY will be the master of ceremonies for this dinner and celebration of Egyptian cuisine and international music and dance.

The evening’s cross-cultural entertainment will include KuUmba, a group of young drummers; the Mexican children’s dancers, Ninos por la Paz; youth group dancers Hmong Dynasty; Middle Eastern dancers Nah’ Joom and more.

International Peace Day was founded in 1981 by the United Nations to give the world some practice at making peace.

The Interfaith Council is a collection of faiths and cultures who have taken on the responsibility of modeling peace in the world and local communities. Those involved include Baha’i, Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, Native American, Sikh, Sufi, Unitarian, Unity and many other Christian denominations.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the celebration and dinner are from 6 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person and $40 per couple.

Greek festival

Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church is celebrating its 69th annual Greek Festival Thursday through next Saturday from noon to 8 p.m.

The public is invited to attend icon painting demonstrations, take church tours, browse the bookstore and watch cooking demonstrations. Authentic Greek coffee will be available, as well as pastries and deli foods. A boutique will sell imported items.

Dinner will be served from 4:30 to 8 p.m. each day of the festival. The menu will include beef kapama, manestra with browned butter and mysithra cheese, Greek salad, Greek-style green beans, rolls with butter, coffee and dessert. There also will be a tavern with beer and wine.

Dinner tickets are $12 for adults, $6 for children, available at City Ramp Garage, First and Stevens; the G. Arger Co., 300 N. Mullan Road in Spokane Valley; Spartan Cutlery in the NorthTown Mall; or at the church. Visitors can dine in or take their meals with them.

Spiritual concert

Christian recording artist Michael Card will perform in concert Tuesday at Faith Bible Church, 600 W. Cora Ave.

Card has recorded more than 20 albums, hosted radio programs, written or co-written 14 books and started his own magazine, The Community Magazine.

The concert will begin at 7 p.m. Advance tickets are $13.50 for general admission, $17.50 for gold seating, $10.50 for groups of 10 or more. Tickets are $15 at the door.

International speaker

Life strategist Lorna Owens will present a workshop, “Reinventing Yourself to Greatness,” Sunday at the Unity Church of Truth, 2900 S. Bernard St.

Owens, originally from Jamaica, became a lawyer in Miami. When she attended her father’s funeral she was struck by the number of people whose lives he had touched and felt compelled to make a difference. Today her mission is to lead women to success by mastering change.

50-plus workshop

WisdomWorks of Coeur d’Alene and the St. Aloysius Faith Formation Office are co-sponsoring a faith workshop for adults 50 or older next Wednesday and Sept. 29 at O’Malley Hall at St. Aloysius, on the corner of Boone and Astor.

“Living Fully the Wisdom Years” will present the keys to spiritual vitality and wisdom. Certified senior adult ministers Roberta Lomanna and Rosemary Thielman will speak from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 22 and from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 29.

Women in Harmony

The Lutheran Women in Harmony is reorganizing and looking for new members.

The new group, Women in Harmony, will meet on the first and third Mondays of the month starting Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the choir room of Central Lutheran Church, Fifth and Bernard. The group will sing popular, sacred and spiritual music.

Public forum

The Northwest Catholic Lay Assembly is presenting an informational forum, “Why Married Priests?” on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Providence Auditorium of Sacred Heart Medical Center, Ninth and Rockwood Boulevard.

The speaker will be Patrick McCormick, an associate professor of religious studies at Gonzaga University. Admission is free. For more information, call 624-9869.

Taize prayer service

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 5720 S. Perry St., is presenting a Taize prayer service Sunday at 7 p.m.

Also called Prayer Around the Cross, this worship service originated in the Taize community of France. It is a quiet candlelight service that includes melodic chants, scripture readings, prayers and silent moments of reflection.
