Arts Commission wants nominees for 2004 awards

The Spokane Arts Commission is calling for nominations for the 2004 City of Spokane Arts Awards. The 13th annual awards will be presented in six categories: Individual Artist, Arts Organization, Arts in Education, Individual Benefactor, Business Benefactor, and Arts Community Leadership.

Nomination forms are available at Spokane City Hal, 808 W. Spokane Falls Blvd., in the Chase Gallery on the lower level or in the Arts Commission office in Suite 610, or online at www.spokanearts.org/awards. Submission deadline is Oct. 15.

Charity art auction

An “Art of Support” art auction and open house will be Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. at the House of Charity Homeless Shelter, 32 W. Pacific Ave. This event is an art exhibition, fund-raiser and auction in support of Catholic Charities’ House of Charity and COR (Center for Organizational Reform) and is part of the Spokane Arts Commission’s Fall Visual Arts Tour.

Auditions

“ Auditions for the Spokane Falls Community College production of “The Importance of Being Earnest” are Monday and Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the SFCC Playhouse, Building 5, 3410 W. Fort George Wright Drive. Call 533-3592 for more information.

“ Washington State University Theatre Programs will audition for actors, dancers and drummers Monday, Wednesday and Thursday for the African play “Death and the King’s Horseman.”

Auditions are open to the public and will be held in Daggy Hall’s Wadleigh Theatre. Drummers will audition at 7 p.m. Monday (no instrument or training required). Actors and dancers will audition at 7 p.m. Wednesday and at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

The cast will include seven or more black women, six or more black men, five or more black drummers, five or more white women and eight or more white men. For more information call (509) 335-5161.

Seeking artists

“ Volunteer artists are needed to assist with the Coeur d’Alene-based Art on the Edge program. The nonprofit organization operated through St. Vincent de Paul offers free art classes to area at-risk youth ages 6 and older, using art as a tool for problem solving and goal setting. Classes are taught Wednesday evenings during the school year. For more information call (208) 676-0917.

“ Spokane Civic Theatre is seeking a new artistic director. The chosen candidate will be responsible for the artistic integrity of the theater and will be expected to effectively and creatively carry out its mission. Kudos

“ The home and studio of area artist Ken Spiering and his wife Jeanie will be featured on the HGTV network series “Homes Across America” today at 6 p.m. (cable channel 34 in Spokane, 46 in Coeur d’Alene).

The Spierings’ home south of Spokane on the Palouse was created by their renovation of a post and beam barn built in 1902. It was the recipient of the People’s Choice Award in the 2002 Home Remodel Contest sponsored by the Spokane Home Builders’ Association.

“ Susan Rohrback, a member of the Spokane Watercolor Society and Idaho Watercolor Society, received first place and Best in Show in the 26th annual Fine Art Show held recently in Ocean Shores, Wash.

Her painting, “Made in Home,” was one of 80 accepted works. Rohrback is an adjunct art instructor for the Institute for Extended Learning Seniors Program.
