Eagles take to Big Sky with sweep of host PSU

Eastern Washington opened up its Big Sky Conference volleyball season by knocking off host Portland State 30-27, 33-31, 30-26.

Megan Kitterman had 13 kills and five blocks for the Eagles (6-5, 1-0 Big Sky), and senior outside hitter Deanna Albers chipped in with a double-double, putting together 14 kills and 11 digs.

The win was EWU’s 17th straight over PSU (6-6, 0-1). The Eagles will be back home this week for matches against Weber State and Idaho State.

• No. 10 UCLA had an easy time in Pullman, defeating Washington State 30-19, 30-22, 30-26. Becky Green had 12 kills, five aces and 12 digs for the Bruins (8-3, 1-1 Pac-10), while Jennifer Todd had 11 kills to lead the Cougars (3-11, 0-2).

Stacey Holbrook had 12 digs and Nicole Martin 29 assists for WSU.

• Christal Morrison and Sanja Tomasevic combined for 36 kills and 30 digs to lead third-ranked Washington (10-0, 2-0 Pac-10) to a 22-30, 30-25, 20-30, 30-26, 18-16 win over No. 2 Southern California (6-2, 1-1) at Los Angeles.

• Brittney Bower had a career-high 17 kills and hit .500 to lead Whitworth to a 30-13, 30-23, 30-17 win over visiting Lewis & Clark (2-8, 1-3 Northwest Conference).

The Pirates (10-2, 3-1) hit .270 overall with 50 kills. The match was never in doubt after Whitworth raced to a 21-1 lead in the first game.

• CC Spokane moved to 4-0 and first place in the NWAACC East with a 3-0 win over host Treasure Valley CC at Ontario, Ore.

Vanessa Fleetwood had 19 kills for the Sasquatch, and Korissa Clevish added 41 assists and four blocks.

Women’s soccer

Cailen McCutchan scored in the 76th minute to lift Washington State (5-2-1) to a 2-1 non-conference win over BYU (3-6-1) in Provo, Utah. WSU scored in the first minute on a goal by Alix Rustrum, one of the Cougars’ three shots in the game.

BYU tied it in the 63rd minute, but WSU goalie Katie Hultin shut the door the rest of the way, withstanding 13 BYU shots.

• Jael Hagerott assisted on a goal in the seventh minute and added a goal later to spark Whitworth (5-2, 3-0 NWC) to a 4-1 win over host Linfield (0-6-1, 0-3) at McMinnville, Ore.

Jennifer Hall scored an unassisted goal in the 30th minute to put the Pirates on top 2-1. Whitworth added two goals in the second half to put away the Wildcats.

• Jackie Button, Tondi Sperline and Jill Giroux scored two goals apiece to lead CC Spokane (5-2-1, 4-1 NWAACC) to a 7-1 blowout at Wenatchee Valley CC.

Men’s soccer

Whitworth rallied from an early deficit for a 3-1 win over host Linfield (2-5-1, 1-1-1 NWC) at McMinnville, Ore. Niko Varlamos, Evan Hendrickson and Sean Lambrecht all scored for the Pirates (6-1, 3-0).

• Alex Megson scored in the 17th minute off an assist from Chris Smith, and Megson returned the favor in the 32nd minute to lead CC Spokane (5-2-1, 3-1-1 NWAACC) to a 3-0 win at Wenatchee Valley.

Cross country

The Washington State men placed 11th and the women placed 16th at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis.

Seniors paced the Cougars men, with Mike Heidt finshing the 8,000-meter course in 32nd place at 25 minutes, 11 seconds and Danny Wolf finishing 43rd with a time of 25:23.49.

WSU freshman Haley Paul led the Cougars women in 66th place with a time of 22:39, and senior Ana Cabrera finished 78th at 22:52.

Women’s golf

Idaho golfers finished 1-2-3 to blow away the competition at the Lady Vandal Fall Invitational with a 33-stroke win over second-place Montana at the University of Idaho’s course.

Renee Skidmore finished first with a 6-over-par 222. Cassie Castleman finished second, three strokes back, and Jennifer Tucker placed third with a 227.

Eastern Washington ended up in third, nine strokes behind Montana. Carlie Allen led the Eagles, tied for fourth with a 232.
