Yarboro, Davis lead top-six efforts by local clays team

Led by Christopher Yarboro and Clint Davis, both of Nine Mile Falls, the five members of the Eastern Washington Youth Foundation team all came home with top-six placings from the Washington State Sporting Clays Championships earlier this month in Bremerton, Wash.

Yarboro placed second in both the D Class main event – including both youth and adults, knocking down 149 of 200 birds – and second overall in the Junior category. Davis, who won the Idaho Junior State Championship prior to going to the Washington event, placed third in the D Class (147 of 200) and third overall in the Junior category.

Other members of the only organized youth sporting clays program in the lower 48 states, whichcompetes out of Landt Farms Sporting Clays, and their finishes: Dominic Metcalf, Reardan, third D Class and sixth junior; Casey Ostrander, Spokane, third E Class and fourth junior; and J.R. Snodgrass, Nine Mile Falls, fifth Sub-Junior.

In the first-day’s preliminary event, Yarboro was first in D Class with 81 out of 100, Davis second in D (73), Metcalf fourth in D (66), Ostrander third in E (64) and Snodgrass fourth in Sub-Junior.

Alaska is reportedly the only other state that has a youth sporting clays program.

Baseball

Washington State’s alumni weekend will be Friday through next Sunday, featuring an alumni game Saturday, a golf tournament Sunday and an auction.

Festivities begin Friday with a social with Cougars coaches following a 6:30 p.m. WSU intrasquad game.

Alumni from odd years will play alumni from even years starting at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bailey-Brayton Field. The golf tournament will begin at 8:30 a.m. next Sunday at the University of Idaho course. Cost is $100 and includes Cougars apparel, refreshments, a barbecue and green fees. Items in the auction include autographed memorabilia by former Cougars, including major leaguers John Olerud and Aaron Sele.

Bicycling

Spokane native and resident Mary Carlson, a member of the Mountain Bike Chicks women’s racing club, is the NORBA National Mountain Bike Series Champion for the Expert Women 25-29 division.

The series is made up of eight races and Carlson emerged as the overall winner after the final race in Durango, Colo., Aug. 26-29. The series includes an event at Schweitzer Mountain July 29-Aug. 1.

Carlson attended Rogers and North Central high schools and graduated from Eastern Washington University.

Bowling

Ryon Cline got hot when it counted and carried the heat all the way to the end to win the Junior Bowlers Tour stop at North Bowl last Sunday.

After surging from 12th place into the fifth and final playoff spot in the second round of qualifying, Cline knocked off one opponent after another, finally dispatching No. 1 qualifier Josh Schmehl 177-144 for the championship. Matt Descoteaux finished third, Cody Salib fourth and Krystl Jackson fifth after vaulting from 21st to fourth in the final round of qualifying.

Descoteaux had high game, a 283, and a 972 four-game series. Brandee Lilly was high for the girls with a 279 game.

In the first JBT of the season, Aug. 22 at Colonial Bowl, Nick Schmehl defeated brother Josh 198-191 in the 10th frame for first place. Matt Bucher was third, Descoteaux fourth and Marshall Pancoast fifth.

College scene

Led by senior setter Kate Reome of Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls), the Central Washington volleyball team is reaching new heights.

Reome, who has surpassed 4,000 assists for her career, is the NCAA Division II national leader in assists with an average of 14.14 per game, and the Wildcats rank second as a team at 15.65 per game.

Central entered the week 11-0 to earn its first NCAA D-III national ranking. The Wildcats are 21st.

• For the second time in three weeks, former Mt. Spokane kicker Dan Kleckner, a sophomore at Montana Tech, is the Frontier Conference special teams player of the week in football.

Kleckner was a perfect 8 for 8 in extra points and kicked a 32-yard field goal in the Diggers’ (2-1) 61-0 win over Montana State-Northern. He also put four of nine kickoffs into the end zone.

Jennifer Powers of Spokane (Gonzaga Prep) is a freshman on the Sweet Briar College women’s tennis team in Virginia. Sweet Briar is an NCAA Division III all-women’s school.

Kim Bussiere, a 2002 graduate of Mead High School, is a junior member of the Cornell College women’s soccer team in Mount Vernon, Iowa.

Crew

Gonzaga University’s annual crew alumni weekend is Oct. 23 at the GU boat house on the Spokane River during the Head of the Spokane Regatta.

Racing will begin at 10 a.m. with an alumni social scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Three Spokane-area teams are competing in the Amateur Softball Association’s Men’s Class D West slowpitch championships in Salem, Ore., this weekend – Slicks of Spokane, Medleys of Liberty Lake and Control Worx of Post Falls.
