The Spokesman-Review

Braves 1, Marlins 0: At Atlanta, a homer by light-hitting Dewayne Wise in the seventh inning provided the only run in Atlanta’s victory over Florida. Mike Hampton (12-9), making his first start since Sept. 11, pitched seven scoreless innings for Atlanta. Carl Pavano (17-8) missed a chance to set a Florida record for wins in a season, although he gave up just two hits in seven innings.

Reds 7, Pirates 4: At Pittsburgh, Paul Wilson became Cincinnati’s second 10-game winner in two nights, and the Reds used a five-run first to beat Pittsburgh. Wilson (10-6) allowed one run and six hits in seven innings to win for the first time in 10 starts since July 8 at Milwaukee.

Mets 4, Cubs 3 (11): At New York, Victor Diaz hit a tying, three-run homer with two outs in the ninth, and Craig Brazell’s first major league home run in the 11th gave New York a victory over Chicago. Brazell, who entered in the 11th as part of a double switch, led off the bottom half and lined a 1-2 pitch from Kent Mercker (3-1) over the right-field wall.

Brewers 8, Astros 0: At Milwaukee, Wes Obermueller pitched a six-hitter for his first career shutout and Milwaukee defeated Houston. Russell Branyan homered, doubled and drove in three runs. Keith Ginter also connected for the Brewers, who snapped a three-game skid.

Cardinals 10, Rockies 6: At Denver, John Mabry hit a three-run homer and Roger Cedeno added a disputed two-run shot, helping St. Louis defeat Colorado. Randy Flores (0-1) threw two scoreless innings for his first major league win in a game pitched from start to finish by Cardinals relievers. Jason Isringhausen got one out for his league-leading 46th save.

Phillies 4, Expos 3 (10): At Montreal, Mike Lieberthal hit a go-ahead single in the 10th and Ryan Howard added a run-scoring double to lead Philadelphia over Montreal. Tim Worrell (5-6) pitched a perfect inning for the win, Philadelphia’s fifth in six games. Tony Batista hit his 32nd homer in the 10th off Billy Wagner, who got three outs for his 19th save.

Padres 6, Diamondbacks 5: At San Diego, Ryan Klesko hit a go-ahead, two-run double in the seventh and finished with four RBIs to lead San Diego to a win over Arizona, keeping alive the Padres’ faint playoff hopes. Trevor Hoffman pitched 1 1/3 innings for his 40th save in 44 chances. He reached 40 saves for the sixth time, the first since 2001.
