Man, infant killed in crash; seven injured

Associated Press

EAST WENATCHEE – A baby and a 23-year-old man died and seven others were injured in a three-car crash that investigators blamed on the man, saying he apparently fell asleep at the wheel.

Four of those who survived the crash Sunday on Washington 28 about 2 1/2 miles east of town were being treated at Harborview Medical Center, and five were taken to Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee.

Those who died were identified as Karina Cortez Hernandez, 1 month, who apparently was thrown from a 1991 Nissan Maxima in which she was riding, and Jose M. Garcia of Los Angeles, driver of a 1992 Dodge Spirit.

Garcia apparently dozed off, crossed the center line and collided with the Nissan, which was then struck by a 1995 Honda Accord, Washington State Patrol trooper Richard A. Magnussen said.
