Brandon, Kootenay post wins in WHL

Lance Monych scored his 14th goal of the playoffs, with 2:58 remaining in the third period, to give the Brandon Wheat Kings a 5-4 victory over the Prince Albert Raiders in the Western Hockey League Eastern Conference finals Friday night in Brandon, Manitoba.

The East Division champion Wheat Kings took a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Game 6 in the series is Sunday in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.

•At Cranbrook, British Columbia, forward Dale Mahovsky scored the game-winning goal, in overtime, as the Kootenay Ice defeated the Kelowna Rockets 2-1 in the Western Conference finals.

Kelowna leads the best-of-seven series, which resumes Sunday, 3-2.
