Offended Alou quits radio show

From wire reports

NOTES

Still stinging Saturday from insulting comments made by radio host Larry Krueger, San Francisco Giants manager Felipe Alou quit his pregame show on the club’s flagship station and Krueger’s employer.

Alou said he felt compelled to act after Krueger lambasted the team’s “brain-dead Caribbean hitters,” and said that Alou’s “mind has turned to Cream of Wheat.”

Krueger was suspended Thursday for a week without pay, a penalty Alou likened to a “slap on the hand.”

Alou was incredulous that Krueger, who made his incendiary remarks on KNBR Wednesday night after the Giants lost 3-2 to Colorado, tried to apologize to him.

“He’s got to be kidding. Apologize? There’s no way to apologize for such a sin,” Alou said. “If I accept it, then the Latins will never forgive me.”

Citing hundreds of millions of Latin Americans, Alou said, “All of these people have been offended by this idiot.”

Sele signed by Texas

Texas signed right-hander Aaron Sele, released earlier in the week by the Seattle Mariners, to a minor league contract. He will pitch for Triple-A Oklahoma next week.

•The Texas Rangers retired former manager Johnny Oates’ No. 26 before the game against Baltimore. Oates died of a brain tumor on Dec. 24, 2004.

•Texas placed outfielder Richard Hidalgo (strained wrist) on the 15-day disabled list.

Royals shake up roster

With the major league’s worst record, the Kansas Royals made some roster changes, optioning second baseman Ruben Gotay and right-hander Leo Nunez to Double-A Wichita.

Former first-round pick Kyle Snyder, a right-hander, was optioned to Triple-A Omaha and veteran catcher Alberto Castillo was released.

The Royals purchased the contract of utility player Denny Hocking from Omaha, recalled catcher Paul Phillips and right-hander Mike Wood from Omaha and right-hander Jonah Bayliss from Wichita. Phillips and Bayliss played for the Spokane Indians.
