Mathews wins National Masters gold medal

George Mathews, 62, of Hayden Lake, Idaho, won a gold medal in the men’s 60-64 hammer throw at the USATF National Masters Track and Field Championships in Honolulu Aug. 7.

Mathews won with a throw of 167 feet, 5 inches. His performance follows gold medals in his hammer throw and weight throw classes at the World Masters Games in Edmonton, Alberta in July.

Jack and Marion Harvey were members of the victorious 70-79 badminton team at the World Masters Games, held July 22-30 in Edmonton, Alberta.

Jack also won gold medals in 80-and-above men’s singles and 75-79 men’s doubles.

Warren Heylman placed fourth in his age group in the 200 and 400 meters at the World Masters Games in Edmonton, Alberta last month.

College scene

Five current and former Gonzaga University men’s rowers participated at the 123rd Royal Canadian Henley Regatta, held Aug. 2-7 in St. Catherines, Ontario.

Mark Voorhees (Bow, Wash./Port High School/Gonzaga ‘04) and Nathan Wilson (Post Falls/Immaculate Conception/Gonzaga ‘05) teamed up to earn gold medals in the Senior Men’s 8+ for Vesper Boat Club. Voorhees also earned gold in the Senior Men’s 4+ and finished fifth in the Senior Men’s Pair, while Wilson earned bronze in the Men’s 8+ 500-meter dash.

Senior Connor Barry (Walla Walla/DeSales) earned gold in the Senior B Men’s 8+ for Camp Randall Rowing Club. Junior David Hinshaw (Soldotna, Alaska/Skyview) and sophomore Scott McCoy (Fair Oaks, Calif./Jesuit) were members of the Penn Athletic Club team, which finished fourth in the Senior B Men’s 8+.

•Washington State University’s fall sports banquet will be held Aug. 25 at the Coeur d’Alene Resort.

The annual gathering will feature athletic director Jim Sterk and head coaches Bill Doba (football), Brian Heffernan (volleyball), Matt Potter (soccer) and Jason Drake (cross country), as well as former head football coach Jim Walden.

There will also be live and silent auctions, featuring more than 100 items. Tickets are available for $60, and all proceeds will benefit WSU student-athlete scholarships.

Lawn bowling

Two teams representing the Spokane Lawn Bowlers Club competed at a 16-team mixed triplets tournament in Penticton, British Columbia on Aug. 7-8.

The team of Denny Perry (skip), Bob Miller (vice skip) and Jean Wren won the “B” division. Competing in the “A” division were Sam and Candy Compagno and Rich Gassey.

Miscellany

Mandatory rules clinics for high school volleyball and football will be held Monday at Coeur d’Alene High School. Both clinics will start at 7 p.m.
