Gunman shoots man in crowd

A 21-year-old Spokane Valley man was shot in the stomach early Tuesday as he stood with a crowd expecting to see a fistfight.

Witnesses told police they’d gathered behind the Yoke’s Market, 15111 E. Sprague Ave., expecting to see two men fight over a girl, but soon got more than they’d bargained for when an unidentified man pulled up in a car and opened fire.

Three to four shots rang out. One bullet hit Bradley Legg, a would-be spectator, in the lower abdomen, narrowly missing his spinal column. He was listed in stable condition Tuesday evening. The shooter is at large.

“He’s going to be alright. He’s really lucky,” Dan Legg said of his son.

Dan Legg said his son, who manages a tuxedo rental shop, wasn’t the kind of kid to get involved in fights. More often than not, Bradley was the kid who broke fights up, Dan Legg said.

Bradley Legg, drifting in and out of sleep, told his father he’d been to a house party earlier in the evening, where two men he didn’t know argued and agreed to fight. That drew the attention of the people in the house, Legg told his father.

Police said witnesses reported that one of the men was hitting on the other’s girlfriend.

Spokane County Sheriff’s Cpl. Dave Reagan said the names of those involved would not be released until citations were issued. Detectives spent Tuesday interviewing witnesses, who mostly scattered after the shooting. Descriptions of the shooter’s car were vague – a white or silver four-door vehicle. Police gave no physical description of the shooter.

Only Legg and some friends remained at the scene when police arrived. Police stopped a group of teenaged girls in a white car with four doors after the shooting. The girls denied knowledge of the shooting, but later approached police to confess details about the incident, which they had witnessed. The girls were booked into the Spokane County Juvenile Detention Center for making false statements.
