Overloaded boat capsizes; 104 die

Bogota, Colombia A small boat overloaded with 113 illegal immigrants capsized and sank in rough waters in the Pacific Ocean, and only nine survivors were found, clinging to a wooden box and buoys, officials said Wednesday.

Ecuadorean Navy Capt. Armando Elizalde told Colombian RCN television most of the people aboard “sank with the boat.” The Colombian Navy said the immigrants’ boat was meant to hold only 15 people.

The boat – whose passengers were believed to be heading for the United States – capsized Friday night more than 100 miles off Colombia.

An Ecuadorean fishing boat found the survivors – seven men and two women – on Sunday, Elizalde said.

Woman kills monk during prayer service

Paris A Romanian woman slipped into a choir of singing monks during an evening prayer service and fatally slit the throat of the 90-year-old founder of an ecumenical Christian community in the presence of 2,500 horrified pilgrims in Burgundy, authorities said Wednesday.

The slaying Tuesday of Brother Roger in the Church of Reconciliation drew reactions of shock and grief from the pope, the leader of the Anglican Church and worshippers around the world.

Brother Roger harbored Jewish refugees during during World War II, then built the ecumenical Taize Community with a mission to reconcile all denominations of Christians and promote dialogue and peace.

Madrid bombing suspect arrested

Madrid, Spain Serbian police arrested a key suspect wanted in connection with last year’s Madrid train bombings, the Spanish Interior Ministry said Wednesday.

Abdelmajid Bouchar, a 22-year-old Moroccan, had been living in Belgrade under an assumed name and a fake Iraqi passport, the ministry said in a statement. There was also an international arrest warrant for him.
