YOUR BEAUTIFUL HOME

The remodeled home of Stan and Kaye Porter at 6609 N. Washington St., soaks up the morning sun. Stan, a retired bricklayer, did the brickwork himself.

A small metal sign on Stan Porter’s garage door reads “House of Porter – established 1965” – the year he bought the house at age 20.

It’s come a long way.

For years, he used the house as a rental property. During that time it was gutted by a fire. So 13 years ago, when Stan moved back in, he got to work.

The one-story rancher is now the only brick home in the neighborhood, thanks to Stan’s 40 years as a bricklayer. He’s made changes all over the house and in the yard, where his wife Kaye put in a pond seven years ago.

She credits Stan for most of the improvements.

“Stan doesn’t believe in having other people do it if you can do it yourself,” she says.

He gives most of the credit to his work buddies, who have often lent their expertise.

“Being in construction all my life, I’ve got lots of friends,” he says.

The arches and brick pillars he put in two years ago are his favorite part of the house. He even made the wrought-iron rail fence in front and shaped it by driving his pick-up over it.
