The Spokesman-Review

The Coeur d’Alene Tribe recently donated $90,000 to the Plummer Fire District for the improvement of emergency services, including response times.

A $50,000 check was initially presented to the district with another $20,000 to follow each year for the next two years in the tribe’s effort to help ensure public safety.

Verizon Foundation recently awarded $33,500 to local organizations to help promote literacy and technology projects.

Recipients are listed with their award: Latah County School District received $,9,000 to expand the Every Family Reads Program; Potlatch School District received $7,500 for technology equipment and training for elementary teachers and students; Palouse Discovery Science Center received $7,500 to establish a literacy resource room; Idaho Community Resources received $9,500 to help with the Jobs Plus expand and diversify the economic and employment base in Kootenai County. Another $6,400 of donated funds from the HEART Reading Program was dispersed to Bonners Ferry Elementary, Potlatch Elementary and Borah Elementary Schools. These funds are gathered through the Check Into Literacy option which enables local Verizon telephone customers to donate a dollar a month when paying their bill.

Eve Knudtsen, an NIC alumna and owner of Knudtsen Chevrolet in Post Falls, has contributed $15,000 to NIC’s Providing Opportunities-Fulfilling Dreams Community Campaign.

The donation will fund student scholarships and will help provide technology for the college’s new Health and Sciences Buildings.
