Don’t overlook new exhibitions

Sandwiched between the holiday craft shows and artists’ open studios are scores of new exhibits across the Inland Northwest.

In addition to Spokane’s monthly downtown First Friday gallery shows, Coeur d’Alene has moved its usual Second Friday Artwalk up a week because of the holiday season.

Folded into the mix are new exhibitions opening this week at Gonzaga University’s Jundt Art Museum, and the Third Street Gallery and University of Idaho’s Prichard Art Gallery in Moscow.

Spokane’s First Friday

Small works at Art Spirit

Once more the contemporary Art Spirit Gallery in Coeur d’Alene is filled floor to loft with spectacular small paintings, sculpture and functional objects for its annual “Small Artworks Invitational.”

The show opens Friday with fine art and decorative pieces smaller than 12 inches in size.

The 35 leading Pacific Northwest artists in the show are Steve Adams, Chris Antemann, Harold Balazs, Mike Berg, George Carlson, Beth Cavener Stichter, Morse Clary, Peter Cox, Tina DeWeese, Allen and Mary Dee Dodge, Don Ealy, Mary Farrell, Pat Flammia, Gina Freuen, Kathy Gale, Terry Gieber, Rhea Giffin, Robert Gilmore, Robert Grimes, Glenn Grishkoff, Nancy Halter and Greg Jahn, Robert Harrison, Melville Holmes, Michael Horswill, Christine Kimball, Mel McCuddin, Karen Mobley, Katherine Nelson, Maurice Nespor, Laura Nuchols, Charles Palmer, Charles Timothy Prutzer, and Sister Paula Turnbull.

An artists’ reception is Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the gallery, 415 Sherman Ave. The exhibit runs through Dec. 31.

The Art Spirit Gallery is only one of 10 stops on the season’s final Friday Artwalk in downtown Coeur d’Alene. The popular Artwalk evenings resume in April.

DeVuono’s ‘Views’ at Jundt

“Lanny DeVuono: Parallel Views” opens today in the Arcade Gallery at the Jundt Art Museum on the Gonzaga University campus.

The exhibit of oil paintings juxtaposes the artist’s long-running series “American Short Stories” with her more recent “Kerala Series.”

Meet DeVuono during an artist’s reception today from 6 to 7:15 p.m., then stay for her free talk at 7:30 p.m. in the Jundt Lecture Hall.

‘Winter Solstice’ in Moscow

Artists interpret the season through their selection of medium and subject in the fifth annual Winter Solstice Exhibit opening Friday at the Third Street Gallery in Moscow, Idaho.

Meet the 29 participating artists at a public reception on Friday from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in the gallery, 206 E. Third St. The show runs through December.

Prichard Art Gallery

While in Moscow, stop by the Prichard Art Gallery for the “University of Idaho Art & Design and Architecture Faculty Exhibition.”

Works in photography, drawing, painting, sculpture, product design mixed media and performance will be on view, along with video works and a film.

An opening reception is Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. in the gallery, 414 S. Main St. The work can be seen through Jan. 21.

Palouse’s Left Bank Gallery

The Left Bank Gallery, 100 S. Bridge St., in Palouse, Wash., is having a grand opening on Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m.

“This will be our holiday show featuring our gallery artists’ originals including one-of-a-kind Santas, handblown glass ornaments and jewelry,” says owner Nelson Duran in an e-mail.

Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.

“Pastel paintings by Thelma Giampietri of Spokane are on display at the Jewelry Design Center, 821 N. Division St., through Sunday. Meet Giampietri between noon and 5 p.m. on Sunday.
