Staff and news service reports

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State used a 34-5 run over the middle portion of the second half to blow past Gonzaga University 73-54 in women’s basketball Monday night.

It was the ninth game in 16 days for Gonzaga (3-6), who are 2-2 on a road trip that ends Saturday at Utah.

GU dominated the opening 20 minutes, twice building comfortable leads.

Stephanie Hawk hit a lay-up at the 12:50 mark to give Gonzaga an eight-point lead. When Hawk, who finished with 11 points, scored from the low post at the 2:46 mark, GU led by seven.

But Kim Sheedy’s 3-pointer with 35 seconds left in the half trimmed the deficit to 30-28 and Sacramento State, which hit 8 of 18 from long range for the game to GU’s 1 of 13, owned the second half.

Sheedy led the Hornets with 22 points. Ashley Anderson had a team-high 13 points for the Bulldogs. Simone Santos scored 10.
