Bi-County: As the Bi-Co league season starts this weekend, Davenport’s girls will face a tough early-season test. On Friday, the Gorillas open at always-tough Wilbur-Creston (1-1), then on Saturday host preseason league favorite Sprague-Harrington (2-0). Davenport finished in the middle of the pack last year, but with a good weekend, could establish itself as a candidate for an upper-echelon league finish.

Panorama: It’s not often that two of the league title favorites meet twice in the opening two weekends, but Curlew (1-1) plays at Inchelium (2-0) to open the league season on Friday after Inchelium beat the Cougars 61-60 at the Northport Tip-Off Tournament. Inchelium returns eight players from a team that came one quarter away from the State B Tournament, losing a 19-point, fourth-quarter lead to S-H in a winner-to-state, loser-out game. … Cusick’s Amanda Smith, a 6-0 junior center who transferred from Newport, showed she’ll be a force in the league with 23 points, nine rebounds and six blocks in the Panthers opening-season, non-league win over Columbia.

Whitman County League: St. John-Endicott (3-1) boys basketball is averaging 85 points per game, reaching a league season high in a 102-33 rout of Waitsburg on Tuesday, and allowing just 41.3. Jesse Butcher and Brent Leifer each scored at least 20 points twice last week, including Butcher’s league-high 26 in a 73-37 win over Dayton on Friday. Tekoa-Oakesdale’s girls (2-0) will be tested when they travel to reigning State 1A champion Colfax (1-0) on Friday night. St. John-Endicott (3-1) will visit Colfax on Saturday.
