Canucks top Ottawa in shootout

Daniel Sedin beat Dominik Hasek with a low shot to the stick side in the fourth round of a shootout to give the Vancouver Canucks a 3-2 victory over the visiting Ottawa Senators on Friday night.

Henrik Sedin and Markus Naslund scored in regulation to help the Canucks improve to an NHL-best 13-1 at home and hand the NHL-leading Senators their fifth loss of the season.

Peter Schaefer and Andrej Meszaros scored for Ottawa, which lost for only the second time in its past 10 games.

Avalanche 4, Devils 3 (SO): At East Rutherford, N.J., Antti Laaksonen scored the only goal in seven rounds of a shootout to give Colorado a victory over New Jersey.

Red Wings 4, Capitals 3: At Washington, Henrik Zetterberg scored two power-play goals and Nicklas Lidstrom added a goal and two assists to lead Detroit to victory over Washington.

Thrashers 5, Blue Jackets 2: At Atlanta, Ronald Petrovicky finished off his first three-goal game with an empty-net goal and Atlanta snapped a five-game losing streak by beating Columbus.

Kyle Wanvig of Minnesota was suspended for one game by the NHL and coach Jacques Lemaire was fined $10,000 one day after the forward drew an instigator penalty in the final minutes of a win over the Penguins. Under the league’s new instigator rule, any player starting a fight in the final 5 minutes of regulation or in overtime is subject to a suspension, with his coach subject to a fine. … Already depleted by injuries, Philadelphia will be without Simon Gagne for two weeks. The All-Star forward, who leads the league with 23 goals, has a groin tear. Philadelphia expects to get leading scorer Peter Forsberg and goalie Robert Esche back for today’s game against Minnesota. … Valeri Bure of Los Angeles had surgery to alleviate lower-back pain and is expected to be sidelined at least eight weeks.
